building an AR from kit

I am really thinking that I will do this.
I would like to build a "preban" m-4 style out of new parts since the ban went away. Maybe out of a Model 1 Sales kit.
However, I have a few questions.
1. Do I need a "preban" receiver, or will any of them work? What brands?
2. Is a chrome barrel and bolt needed?
3. what is the diffrence between "m4 style" and C.A.R. style furniture? What does C.A.R stand for?
4. Who has the best kits?

As you can see, I am a novice, but willing to try.

    1. No, you dont need a pre-ban rec since the Assault weapons ban is now gone. If you live in one of the states that still has a ban on AW's, then you cannot build one. DPMS and Armalite make good lowers.

    2. I would get a chrome lined barrel, but a chrome bolt carrier and bolt are not needed. It will work fine with the evil black bolt.

    3. CAR I believe is for Carbine. The furniture is a shorter front handguard and a collapsable stock.

    4. As I mentioned in #1 I like DPMS and Armalite. They make good component parts kits and recievers. Thats my view from building and shooting several of the AR series rifles.

    car stands for colt automatic rifle, as it was first called back in the day, some of the newer stocks have 6-positions and have a "ribbed" design, where as the older CAR type stocks have 3-4 positions... pictures show what they look like.

    if you order barrels from bushmaster they offer standard grips(shown below) or for an extra $20 offer m4 hand guards which are thicker, i personally dont like how they look, just too big in my opinion, and in a semiautomatic weapons i dont see them being needed

    Thanks guys. I am going for it. I will let you know how it turns out and hopefully post pics. This will take a few weeks for me to complete.

    Biggest problem I've had with folks building kits is to make sure the chamber is clean. Many times first shot will fail to feed and embeds particles from manufacturing process back in to chamber.
    We recommend Chrome lined or SS barrels and clean and polish before firing.

    Not to discourage your project by any means, but whether or not you go with the project, another something you might want to consider is a LE Colt Carbine/M4 style gun which are now available for legal transfer to civilians.

    1/7 twist and top Colt quality will insure you have a superior gun, that also will hold its resale value. Kit guns are great for many folks, but like custom cars they aren't necessarily desirable for resale.

    BA2, That is a good idea and I would jump on one. However, all they ones I have seen in local shops are still 12-1300 bucks. The dealers have not dropped prices on them. I wolud like to stay in the under a grand range for this project.
