Need info on old H&R single shot .22 (I think!)

I have a friend that is trying to determine the brand maker of an old .22 single shot rifle that needs a bolt assy.
It is marked "XL Witte HDW CO. St. Louis Mo. It then has a circle with an M in the center. I'm guessing at it being an H&R because the trigger mechanisum has a pin plunger and spring about 1" to the rear of the trigger. H&R is the only .22 that I can find that has this set up. It is a "takedown" style, i.e. it has a large screw under the stock that allows you to remove the stock from the barrel and action. I'd guess that it is a 1920 vintage.
The sights, front and rear, are dovetailed to the barrel and the stock has a finger grove on both sides.
I'm trying to find a web site with pictures!
Any info would be appreciated.

    H&R gun were manufactured in Worcester MA. H&R did make guns and parts for other manufactures. Sound like your gun could be H&R made for Witte Hardware Co. Witte must have been a very large store at the time to order guns with there name on them.

    The only thing My database says is that Wittes Hardware Company guns were made by J. Stevens Arms Company.... WITTES HDW. CO. Located in St. Louis, Mo.

    if your estimate about the era of manufacture of this 22 single shot is correct it can not be an H&R. H&R did not manufacture 22 rimfire rifles until after world war II. all my information on 'whitte' says their shotguns came from cresent. my guess as to the manufacturer of this rifle would be 'meridian firearms co.' meridian had at least one patent issued them for a 22 rimfire rifle.
