7.62 x 25 ammo

At a gunshow this weekend one of the ammo vendors was selling Tokarev ammo in boxes of 72 for 9.95 or cases of 1200 for 149.95. The box was marked CARTUSE PENTRU PISTOLET CALIBRU 7,62 mm. 72 buc. the case was stamped 22 over 83. Where did this stuff come from and is that a fair price for this caliber?

    Case wise, is the .30 Mauser the same as 7.62 x 25? If true, how many different loadings are there in surplus ammo? It started in the broom handle Mauser, then the Luger (before 9 mm), followed by the Soviet Tokerev pistol and then their WWII submachine guns. Finally it was a hot load in the CZ-52.

    Seems there could be a problem with newer loads in older weapons.

    This is the quantity the communists packaged for the 72 round PPSH41 drum. My guess is Roumanian manufacture.

    Romanian, 1983 vintage. #22 is the factory number. Given an average retail mark-up, not an unreasonable price. I have a case myself, and it doesn't shoot too bad, if your aim is plinking with your TT33 or CZ52, though it was mostly made with a PPSh in mind.

    It's corrosive, and Berdan-primed.

    SMG ammo is hotter than standard pistol ammo. Not recommended to use this stuff in a Tokarev. CZ52 can handle it, but there really isn't any good reasons to run max loads through any gun on a regular basis as that is just putting additional stress on the parts.

    As mentioned above this stuff is corrosive, and not particularly accurate ... these rounds were not intended for handgun use.

    There is no "standard pistol loading" for the 7.62x25, it is all SMG ammo. Niether Toks or CZs should have any problem with milsurp ammo in good condition.

    Some 7.62x25 ammo is loaded light, (S+B comes to mind) and that may be what you are thinking of, and some ammo has been (likely erroneously) been too hot (like Bulgarian '52), but barring that, should all be OK for your milsurp handgun.

    Now the old C96 Mauser can chamber and fire the 7.62x25, but this should NOT be done. The Mauser is a far weaker design, and its ammo is loaded much weaker. (Comparable to 9mm Parabellum vs. 9mm Glisanti)

    Mauser ammo, however, could be used in the more modern firearms. Likely it does have enough impulse to operate an SMG like a PPSh, with its heavy bolt/blowback design.
