44mag ammo

I bought a winchester 44mag 16" lever action this summer. It's my deer rifle this year. For shooting I bought some american eagle 240gr jhp. Can I use these for deer? Plus some brands have 44mag hunting rounds that come in boxes of 25. Some are 240gr jhp too. What is the difference from these Hunting rounds and normal rounds like the american eagle.

    Hello Kaos...

    Generally speaking, you will not get the same accuracy out of the inexpensive American Eagle ammo that you will by purchasing quality made hunting loads. Another big difference will be the bullet construction. The Hunting ammo will have a better grade bullet that has a real consistent expansion, while the cheap stuff (American Eagle), uses the cheapest made bullets available. My personal preference for hunting deer with a .44 Mag are the Sierra 180 grain JHPs loaded to maximum velocity... they shoot much faster (flatter trajectory), and from point blank out to 75 yards, they hit harder than the heavier 240 grain factory loads. I load mine with 31 grains of WW-296 and shoot them in a Ruger Super Redhawk.

    I preferred the Federal 220 gr. metal case profiled but alas they are no longer made.

    I like the 240 grain JHP or JSP, but not in those loads. I think I normally shoot federals out of my Ruger .44 carbine.
    Just buy a few different boxes and see how they shoot through YOUR gun...
