5.7 mm Spitfire

Just wondering if any of you have any personal experience with the 5.7 mm Spitfire. I have been "playing around" with it for about 18 months now and have been impressed (and surprised) by its performance considering the case capacity. Would like to hear of anyone's experience with it.

    just some thoughts on wildcats in general and the spitfire in particular. the reason that they seem to out perform standard cals. is there is no 'red line'. all factory cartridges most be loaded no 'hotter' than Sammie (sp) spec's. the .30/06 is loaded to (i believe) about 48,000 psi while the .30/06 a.i. probably goes up to 62,000 psi or so. same with the .22 hornet, factory=40,000 psi., .22k hornet=til the primers fall out. same with the spit fire (.22 cal on a .30 carbine case) the cases are very strong and would probably be able to stand a 70,000 psi. load and give velocities close to a .223 rem.

    Having been wildcatting for a while, I agree to a point that there is no 'red line.'

    however....

    The SAMMI standards are for the mainstream industry so that they can be safe in ALL modern firearms (theoreticaly), but be sure and use good common sense and watch for pressure signs (loose primers, blown primers, tough extraction, bulging case heads, ect) and at the first hint, back off!! If accuracy is your goal, you'll usually find your top accuracy below your max velocity.

    I certainly agree with nhohshooter about not pushing any cartridge to far, but most wildcaters like to brag about 'mine is faster than yours'. just because you 'can' doesn't mean you 'should' (just ask Bill Clinton). Last year I completed a .257 roberts rifle and was trying so different loads, I'd load 5, shoot across the oehler, load another 5 with 1 grain more powder, watch for pressure signs ect. by the time I had reached the upper limit of this particular rifle (case head expansion of about .0015") I was well over the velocity listed for a .25/06 with the same bullet. do I load this hot for hunting?? HELL NO. Where these loads safe for this rifle?, probably.

    Appreciate the responses so far. My goal is not to get the "mostest" velocity possible with this round. I have been reloading for over forty-five years and am currently reloading for five different wildcats. The two loads I am using currently are well below the calculated maximum, but give the best accuracy of the seventy-two loads I tested in load development. I hope to hear from others with experience with this round to compare results, impressions, etc.. Have a great day.
