Hi and welcome to the forum!

Here is a link to a group that can give you a ton of info. on Mossbergs.

In general your rifle was mfg. between 1944 and 1950. The space in the stock is for a spare magazine. Very accurate rifles. In 1942-43 approx. 50,000 were mfg. as the 42MB to be used as training rifles for US and British troops. These rifles are marked US Property, and after the war many were sold and used as competition rifles.

The 42m's were made both for the US Army and for the civilian market. The latter have no SN (it was not required at the time). The military models were marked US PROPERTY on both receiver and bbl and have a prominent SN under that legend. Many also have British Proof Marks, as they were sent to Britain as either trainers or for the home guard during WWII. They are superior in quality and accuracy to anything made today under $300!!
