Gun Rest Recommendation?
I picked up a new 7mm-08 gun (Savage 11G) and scope and would like to break in soon. I told gun expert that I was going to borrow a vice type shooting rest that actually holds the rifle. You move two ends up and down as you set before firing. He said that this was not a good way to zero in the gun and even said it was not accurate. I don't understand why. He wanted to sell me a combination of a heavy duty metal front shooting rest and a rear bag. Help! I am a novice. Is he telling me truth or just trying to make another sale? Bucky

Hello most people use BAG type rest to shoot a rifle off of a bench rather than a VICE type but no matter what you use be aware that a rifle will shoot to different point of aim depending on how it is held . After a ROUGH zero you should hold the rifle the same way you do in useing it .Standing, sitting, with or without rest ETC.for final ZERO. 0 -

Tend to disagree with Perry (all due respects), zero totally with sand bags then fire the way you would normally shoot. Fire using your stance at several distances, remembering and or making notes as to that various groupings and point of impact. Remember, different bullets and loads will change, as well as #of rounds fired and type of day etc.
Although to answer your basic question, my opinion, for initial zeroing, all you need is sand bags, make sure your weapon is secure and doesn'ts move between shots or reloading.0 -
Hey Bucky we all got opinions some based on more experience than others and here's mine. I think if you want to borrow that rest and get yourself sighted in with it there is no harm done. From a solid rest like that you should be able to get the gun shooting on the bullseye, but when that stage is complete there is no substitute, you must shoot the gun from sandbags and get it zeroed, once this is complete you really should shoot the gun in hunting situations or positions. I've shot nearly 75% of all of my big game from a sitting position utilizing sling, forearms, and thighs this for me is very accurate, also shoot prone and try standing with a rest. Then and only then will you become accustomed to the rifle and know what your limits are. If you only shoot from a mechanical rest or only shoot from the bench with sandbags you will never know what you and the rifle will do in a feild situation. You need to know your limits to be an ethical hunter........ 0 -
Have to agree with others, sandbags are the way to go. If you plan on doing a lot of shooting from a bench (doing load development, etc.) then the adjustable front rest would be a good investment. If you only shoot a few times a year mostly to sight in/practice for hunting then buy or make some good sandbags. If you do buy an adjustable front rest be sure and get one that is heavy enough for the caliber you will be shooting (you don't want it to move during recoil). 0 -
When using sandbags, make sure the forestock is resting on the bag and not the barrel- your results will be much more consistent.
How do you like the Savage? Is the trigger good?

By far,..of everything I have tried (and that's a lot), the Uncle Buds, Bull Bag 15" model is the best shooting/sighting aid before you go to a mechanical front rest and rear bag set-up. The Mechanical rests are more precise at long range and with target triggers (1-2oz),..but for off of the hood, or bench, or prone, etc the best device is the Uncle Buds bull bag 15" model, unless you wish to shoot BR matches,..then the Bald Eagle or Sinclaire etc front rest is a necessity.
He was telling you the truth,...those clamp on things are only good for a cleaning cradle,..never use them for accuracy work,..they do not work!!
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

Don't fire over the roof or hood of a vehicle or the blast will screw up the paint job. 0
