TC 35 or the 45/70
I have just got a TC with the calibers 222, 223, 7MMTCU, 30-30, 357, 45, I am wanting to get eiter a 35 or a 45/70.. i really want the 45/70 i think..althoug i have never shot eiter round any advice would be great.

As Mike notes, either of the rounds will be something to be reckoned with from a Contender. The 35 Rem is a fine woodlands cartridge, but the 45/70 in its' various loadings will of course outperform it in every category! If you are hunting Black bear OR Whitetail I would go for the 45/70 and learn to deal with the recoil.

If you are handloading, then my nod would go to the .45-70. It can be loaded from a very mild reduced loading with 330 gr (or lighter) cast bullets all the way up to loads that no sane human being would ever shoot in a handcannon. Of course, a lot depends on the intended use. 0 -
Both good calibers, but as you already have 7TCU and 30-30, plus I assume a 45 colt or 45/410 combo I think your next step should be the 45-70. You can always come back and fill in the caliber gaps later on.
As previously mentioned you can handload to suit the game your after and while 35 Rem. works fine on Black Bear ... 45-70 will work better. If you don't handload you still have a range of commercial ammo to choose from.
Lastly, while I am not a fan of brakes I suggest you consider same for the 45-70. My 1st barrel did not have one and it was stiff but manageable. I then acquired one w/ a brake as part of a trade and decided to try it out before selling/trading it off, and I ended up selling off my original barrel. Louder than blazes but much easier to handle.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
I have a Contender with the 12 inch muzzle tamer barrel in 45/70 I don't shoot it without gloves,it's a kicker.

Great selection of calibers to start with. Only problem with Contenders is you usually have to find a 12 Step program to curb the desire for new barrels [:)]
I have a 45-70 with a Muzzel Tamer and it is manageable, especially with the Pachymyer Decellerator grip. Highly recomend!
The 35 Remingtom is another fine cartridge as well. Tough call.
I would opt for the 45-70 just for versitility and the rimmed case (easier extraction)
If you're new to Contenders, I highly recomend checking out Mike Bellm's website, www.bellmtcs.com A wealth of information there for the novice and expert alike. I have 3 barrels that he has rechambered and they shoot GREAT!
The real versitility with the Contender is in the wildcats. Bellm has 3 simple ones, but Bullberry and Ed Brown as well as others offer fine ones as well. I have never been disapointed with Bullberry and they even replaced a used barrel that I bought with a new one just because I couldn't get it to shoot less than 1" groups! Great service.
