new deer rifle
I currently have a marlin 30/30 and I'm looking to upgrade. I was wondering what recommedations you have for a rifle and ammunition, ultimately I would like something for a shot between 150 and 250 yards.

I am going to add to my collection this year. I usually have shots under 200 yards. I am looking for a quick pointing rifle with the ability to have a quick follow up shot. I already have 2 lever guns in 30-30 and .35rem. and I have bolts in 7mm-08 and .270 so please don't suggest those. Also, I don't want a .44 mag carbine. I am considering a new rem 7600 in 7mm-08 or a rem 7400 in .308 what do you guys think? As always thanks for your replies. 0 -

Out of those two I'd go with the 308win just cause I'm fond of that caliber[;)]. Or a Remington 700 in 280rem.[:D]

If the shots are to be kept under 200 and generally would not exceed 150 yds., I would go with a Marlin in either 45/70, or 450 Marlin; of the two of those I personally like the 45/70 for several reasons, not the least of which being ammo availability. You are already used to lever guns so there would be little if any adjustment period. If you hunt woods areas, then the 45/70 is my definate choice. Twigs and branches that might otherwise slightly deflect a 30 caliber bullet will be smashed to atoms by the 405 gr. 45/70 bullet. The 7 Waters round is another good one for lever guns, but I think your 35 Rem pretty well covers alot of the ground that it does, so go for the BIG BORE!

Heft the 7600's, they may be quick but they are also pretty heavy. For quick handling you can't beat the levers. The only caliber that ther 7600 comes in that interests me is 35 whellen. As you already have a 35 rem that wouldn't make much sence. From the calibers that you already own, I'd think that you'd either be looking for a 243 or a mag of some sort. 0 -
I have a 7400 in .243. It is a really nice and accurate gun. I can consistently bust clay pigeons(motionless) at 220 yards from a rest using factory ammo. However, I shoot it very little because it is such a PITA to clean.

Might want to look at a Tikka,the T3 is all they import in the USA any more.They hold up to they're accuracy gaurantee seen'em shot .2@ 100 yrs before. .243 .308 and any 300 magnums are my caliber suggestions. 0 -
All the previous posts are good options, and I must add my 2 cents-for all around performance, quick handling, and consistency of shot placement/kill zone, you will be very hard pressed to find any rifle that preforms better than the Winchester model 70, in 308 caliber. That particular configuration has been used for every species know to man, on every continent you can think of. And just too back that up, you already have the second best rifle in the 270 bolt, that you could ever hope to have. If you think about it, you pretty much have all the4 bases covered anyway. Just a thought!

My opinion, for what it's worth: Looks like you prefer a little lighter recoil for the most part and already own most of the better/popular deer calibers for the range you need to reach, so.......................
Spend $500 on a Savage Model 99 in .300 or even .250, shoot it open sights and do what you're really out there to do............
Have a blast and maybe kill a deer, too!
You can readily find ammo from 140gr up to 180gr at a decent price and the old 99's fill the bill as to what you appear to be looking for so, why not hunt with a piece of history and when you're done hunting forever..........pass it on!0
