Can't find serial number on Remington 581

I have a Remington 581 .22 bolt action rifle and cannot find the serial number. I expected it to be on the receiver. According to the Remington website, Model 581 was made from 1967 to 1983. Where should the serial number be? Could this rifle have been made before numbers were required and would a big company like Remington not put on numbers in the 1960s?[?]

  Remington did not serialize all their .22 rifles, prior to 1968. We recently had a post regarding a Nylon 66. It was trying to be sold as a "RARE" Japanese "Prototype" because it didn't have a serial number.
