help with winchester question

I have a winchester model 100 in .308. How strong is this action. According to serial # it was made in 1964. Also I would like to know how hard it would be if even possible to rechamber to 7mm-08. Since the case is basically the same what would I have to change and would it work if I did? Also, how much would this job run me? As always thanks for your replies.

    I can not honestly say how strong the Model 100 action is, as I have no experience with one.

    As for your other question, it is impossible to "rechamber" from a larger diameter bore to a smaller diameter bore. What you can do is replace the barrel, which should be the only thing needed to convert from .308 to 7mm-08 (since the 7mm-08 is simply a .308 that has been neck-sized to .284). No telling what the total cost will be until you actually do it, but I would guess at least $300 for the barrel and labor to install and properly headspace it.

    Since the Model 100 is gas-operated, through a hole that is drilled through the rifleing in the barrel. It is quite a bit more complicated then just replacing the barrel. The gunsmith who does the work MUST be familiar with gas-operated semi-auto firearms. As he has to drill the correct diameter hole, ( Model 100 doesn't have a ajustable gas system as some military rifles ), to enable the rifle to function with the various weights of .284 Cal. projectiles. Also it goes without saying that the hole has to be precisely located, AFTER the barrel is installed/headspaced in the receiver.


    Just looking at my Model 100 IPB's, the barrel has a integral gas cylinder housing. It seems almost impossible to rebarrel a Model 100 unless you could get your hands on a original barrel. Since they made the Model 100 in .284 Winchester, seems to me that would be your only option.

    Rufe... those are some very good points made[:)] As I previosly mentioned, the Model 100 (and really any of the post WW-II made Winchesters models) is/are not exactly my strongest area of expertise[:(]

    Since Bob is not suppose to shoot! I will use my single shot! Bang!!! The last time I checked, pumps, auto's, bolts, levers, aren't they all really "single shot" they just have the ability to reload quicker. Dave
