Remington 742 BDL in .308

I bought a nice older Redfield 6X scope today to put on my Remington M-660 in 6 mm caliber. It came with a Rem. M-742 BDL .308 rifle attached. It looks almost like new. I have to decide whether to sell it or keep it. It was made in the mid-70's as best I can tell by the serial number. What can I expect from this .308 in terms of accuracy and reliability? What are your experiences? Will it be worth $225 without the scope in case I decide to sell it? I'm not sure yet how I'll like that basketweave checkering pattern.

    I'm sure you can get what you're asking for the rifle; the question is: have you shot it and gotten to know it yet? In 308, they are very nice high plains guns; they are not going to shoot a mile, but they do a fine job up to the max. hunting range of 350yds.
    I don't own a 308, but I've sure reloaded thousands over the years, and with the right load; you could be happily surprised-give it a session at the range and see if you still want to sell.

    I see several comments regarding older Remington autos, commonly called jam-o-matics, but the two (one at a time) that my dad has had were reliable guns. While not as accurate or handy as other types of actions, they were sufficient to the tasks for which they were designed. Both of the guns my dad had were M-740s, and I forget what the exact differences between the 740 & 742s were, but seems to me it was minor. It does appear that a good one is a good one; and a bad one can't be made into a good one for any amount of parts or labor, so give it a try and see what you've got.

    My dad had one in 30-06 and the only time it jammed was using gun oil in cold weather. The cure then (30 yrs. ago) was triflo (teflon based lube)and would recommend Break Free after a thorough cleaning.
    Check the bolt and recieved thoroughly, too. If its been shot a lot and the reciever is galled, there is no fix other than having it converted into a pump, which if one looks around is cheaper to buy new/used.
