I.D. smith & wesson civil war 32.cal

Greetings
I have a question about a 32. cal pocket pistol i can make out on top of barrel " smith & wesson not sure of the next but after that is Massachusetts and at the end its clear as a bell "Nov.24,65"

Can anyone help with this, i think it is like a model 1 type 3 but not sure because the date is earlier then what i have been told for this model

i would be greatful for any help XRay

    If it's a .32 it's a "Model 1 1/2" or possibily a "Model 2". As they made different versions or"Issues" of the 1 1/2, you will have to give us a detailed physical description and/or photos. Also a serial number with the last (2) digets "X" out.

    Obviously not a gun from the War for Southern Independence. The date is well after the tragic end of the war.

    Hi and welcome to the forum.

    There may be more than one patent date, but if the last/only date is Nov 21, 1865 (not Nov 24, 1865) then it would be a Model One-And-A-Half, Old Model; aka The Model One-and-a-half, 1st Issue.

    On some (but not all) there were patent dates of Apr. 3rd, 1855 and July 5th, 1859. The 1865 date was added after serial number 15,304 and mfg. was between 1865 and 1868 with s/n running from 1 to about 26,300

    However, pictures should nail it down. If you don't have them then this is about as good as I can help you. If you do have pictures but do not have the ability to post them you can use the email icon at the top of this reply to contact me and I'll provide you with my direct email address so you can send them to me as regular email attachments, and in turn I will post them here for you.

    Should be stamped on the bottom of the butt ( in metal on base of grip ). If your able to take the wooden grips off it should be stamped on inside if the grips, if they are the original grips.
