Pro's and Con's of Full Metal Jacket?
I'm debating whether to go with FMJ or hollow point bullets in my next order. I'll be buying either 500 or 1000 rounds, so I can't really split it up easily. I've always shot HP's before, and love the effect, but hear people brag about how great FMJs are. What's the perks of FMJ as opposed to HP? I'll be mostly plinking with them, and probably some medium size game hunting (i.e. deer and coyotes). Advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Bullet expansion! If you want to kill your prey instead of just punching a hole through it,then the hp. I shot a coyote a couple months back with a .223 . Forgot I had just been shooting fmj's and wondered why the coyote made it 200 yrds before dropping.Wrong mag oops!!

In some states, it is illegal to hunt with FMJ's. You need to use either an hollow-point or soft-point with exposed lead tip. 0 -
Be aware that not all hollowpoints are game bullets either. Lots of the bargain 7.62x39 HP's don't expand well in soft tissue. Also, some of the finest match bullets are HP's, but are definitely NOT designed to expand. Tell us what you're looking at.

For target shooting and general plinking, FMJ is fine.
For hunting, soft point or expanding HP are what you should be using. Using FMJ, you're often likely to just wound game.0 -
Here's one of them. Verdict as a deer/coyote round? Is there any reason to go for the FMJ, given that they're only good for plinking, and cost is the same?

Gawd, bullet design is so important. You didn't say what you're shooting or what you're shooting at. If you're hunting use a hunting bullet appropriate for the game. Target shooting, are you plinking or trying to group?
Made the mistake of hunting with 162 gr BTHP and BTSP match bullets in a 7mm mag. The soft points just drilled right thru Bambi and the HPs did all sorts of strange things. But I could shoot 1/4 groups at 100. Live and learn.0 -
Buy a few of each first and see what you and your gun likes ,and as suggested check the state hunting law ,ether way shot placement is the most important ,even the best hollow point isn't worth a darn if you can't hit with it ,another point on trying a few is they both could be loaded different ,have different shooting characteristics

Don't know if I would be hunting with it ,hope you got a legal hunting mag ,but if the hollow points are the same price ,why not ,they tend to feed anything ,but before I put all my eggs in one basket ,I would shoot a few first if you can

Five round mags shouldn't draw too much criticism. Besides, I'll probably only use it for coyotes. 0 -
Winchester used to make brass cased, soft points, I suspect for the then popular mini 30 bolt rifle by Ruger. These would be good for deer and coyotes. Another thing besides the law of your state (I really doubt they allow fmj for deer much less coyotes), ricochet can be really bad with fmj. The rusky soft points will too, but still not as bad as the fmj. I'd go with the soft points, at least they would shoot the same as plinking, which is practice for hunting. 0 -

IL won't even let you use a rifle, so that's automatically out of the question. It would be in KS, where no one cares so long as you don't shoot a cow. 0
