Lyman Great Planes Hunter
Has anyone used 777 powder with the Power Belt bullets in a Lyman .54 Great Planes Hunter rifle. If so what degree of accuracy did you get. Any other comments would be appreciated. Thanks Steve

What's your rate of twist in the GPHR? Unless I'm thinking of a different Lyman rifle, that has a 1:66 twist, which only works for roundballs. I may be wrong, but given the cost of Power Belts, I'd suggest being sure you have somewhere in the vicinity of 1:28-1:32, before buying any. 0 -
Lyman Great plains "Rifle" has a 1-in-60" twist for patched round balls. Lyman Great plains "Hunter" has a 1-in-32" twist for longer bullets and Sabots. I have no hands on experience with either although my brothers each own one (Rifle, and shoot round balls exclusively. 0 -

I have a .50 cal Great Plains with 1 in 60" barrel that shoots very well at 100 yards with Pyrodex and Clear Shot with patched round balls. I haven't tried it yet with 777, but from the experience I've had with 777 in other rifles, I think 777 will be even better. I think the same would be true with the faster twist Hunter barrel as well.
I do have a custom made .40 cal Hawken, with a 32" octagonal barrel by Ed Rayl, with a 1 in 14" twist. I've been working with it with 777, and so far the results look very promising. I normally shoot a 400 grain swaged soft lead bullet. My accuracy load with ff Goex is 65 grains, with 75 to 80 grains being max. With ff 777, 50 grains shoots real well, and 55 grains will blow the hammer back to the half cock notch, so I would consider 50 grains of ff 777 as a maximum load. The 50 grain 777 charge seems to be as accurate as 65 grains of Goex (2" avg. @ 100 Yards), but is much cleaner. I haven't had the chance to try other loads yet, but I might find something better still. I think 777 may be better than most of the black out there, and certainly better than the substitutes.
