Rock Is. Armory 1911-A1 - Need opinion please
Am considering purchasing a cheaper 1911-A1. Was told about this one which sells for $329 + tax. Told by dealer that it's marked "Rock Island Armory" with a crest on left side. Made by Armscorp? Would like to know if anyone feels these are decent .45 copies or should one pay more to get better quality? I'm looking for just a basic GI.45 copy for my Dad. In advance, thanks!!!

I've had a few problems with mine, but all in all, it's a decent gun.
My take on it is this:
1) As a plinker, it's just fine. I wouldn't recommend it as a carry gun, though. If you put the "wrong" type of magazine into it, it will misfeed on you (and by "wrong" I mean one it just happens not to like... it's a picky gun).
2) If you're looking for a project gun, go ahead and get the Rock Island since 1911 frames are pretty standard. I'm no expert on this part, though, and am simply relaying what I've been told.
3) As far as packing additions onto it, I have a compensator on mine that required a little shaving down to get it to fit. Anything you get for it may need some modifying, but nothing you couldn't do yourself.
Overall, my only beef with it is it's tendency to misfeed with different magazines and the chaotic nature of which mags it'll misfeed... no two Rock Islands will misfeed the same two mags.
But if you're looking for a carry gun, get something else.0 -
out of the box you're going to want to upgrade mag.'s to Wilson or Cobramags...also consider barrell upgrade and factory recoil spring is going to be @ 10lbs...consider new 18lb. spring...I started with top of the line SS Armscor, then started adding the goodies...

Could have bought a Kimber...yes but it was an enjoyable experience watching and helping it come together...it's the only gun in the world exactly like the one I have and it will drive tacks...

I have never had any problem with mine.It performed great right out of the box.I must be lucky though my friend has had accuracy problems with his. 0 -
They are manufactured in the Philipines and have several grades. I have the basic model and put a Chip McCormick trigger on it and then I polished all the wearing surfaces mirror bright and smooth with my dremel so it seems it almost never needs oil and I really like it. The only other thing I want to do to it is the recoil spring. Other than that it came with a Novak mag and I have put my dads Colt Commander mag into it and never had a problem with either. To me its just a good ol'e rugged .45 that I didn't have to get a loan to buy and it shoots very good groups with my reloads at about 950 fps. There is nothing wrong them at all. But if you have an xtra 500-600 bucks to add to the 329 then buy a Kimber. I can only see those higher end .45s if you really shoot a lot, maybe competively, law enforcement, or some special need, but just to go out to the range and fire off a couple 100 rounds then go home and clean it till the next time, you'd be better served with the Rock! You can run that Wolf brand ammo thru it and not worry about screwing up a 1500.00 dollar pistol. My dad likes mine he says it reminds of his WWII days when he ran the range at Bergstrom field. It looks closer to what they had issued back then. 0 -

I recommend the Sprinfield Armory Mil-Spec 1911. I bought one at a gun show for $350. It will shoot anything: FMJ, JHP, SWC, etc.
