.22 R.F. shot cartridge
CCI and Win. use shot size No. 12 Rem No. 10. CCI says for pest control about 15 ft. I assume this means death. I only wish to burn the butts of stray dogs and cats. What distance can I safely shoot a dog or house cat without causing serious injury. I assume distance varys from dog to house cat. Years ago we referred to this load as "mustard seed". Also please advise where I can order CCI 22 Shotshells since most say "sold out". Thanks for your help.

I would think that just the sound of a .22 blank going off would do the job.If you really only want to burn their butts remember not to shoot at them from the front, or side because you don't want to take out an eye.

fyi, my winchester m-61 using cci 12 shot can break clay targets at 21 yds. those cci's will kill a cat. use blanks to scare them. dogs and cats are wise and wont return, just new ones will.

I have shot one big trouble making tomcat in the rump on three different occasions, twice with, I think, Remington with the crimped brass case, and once with CCI with the blue capsule. The range has been from 20-25 feet twice and once at 30 feet. The closer ranges moves his body when it hits. There has been no serious injury apparently, he has a long coat of fur. But the other postings are correct, don't hit him from the front as that could cause serious damage to his eyes and nose. 0 -
Hello Buy or borrow a bb gun Like a Daisy RED RIDER it makes lost of RATTLE when you shake it and not as much noise when it goes off as a 22 bird shot All I have to do after a few times is shake the bb gun and they all run. The rifleing on all but smooth bore 22"s make the shot spread too much. 0 -

It is doubtful that beyond 15 feet there will be any permanent damage to a dog or cat, but anytime a loaded gun is aimed at something living, who knows what will happen for sure. I wouldn't advise shooting either. I think a BB or pellet gun as previously suggested is a better alternative.

At that short distance a small home made slingshot will do it. I use
a ball of "duct seal" about 3/8" diam. with heavy rubber bands and a
pouch for the neighbors cats at the bird feeder. After a few good shots
they get the message and no real harm done.0 -
If the animal in question belongs to some PC dipwad, shooting it with even the .22 dust shot loads might bring a visit from the Humane Society, animal control people, local LEOs or even a process server. A super soaker loaded with ammonia or "Bitter Apple" (latter available at most any pet shop) and aimed in the animal's face will quickly encourage it to loiter elsewhere with no permanent damage. The logistics might be a bit more difficult (don't know what the ammonia will do to the sealing elements if it is kept loaded for extended periods), but otherwise no downside. I've used the Bitter Apple several times for similar purposes and the trespassing animal has yet to return. If you are absolutely certain it is feral, then you have more options. Ask your local FFL to order the shot loads if they don't have any.
