How 2 Remove Weld on Romainin SAR-1 (AK)
When the stupid gun semi-auto ban was in effective I bought one of the Romainin SAR-1 (AK-47 copy) with the side folding metal skelton stock but since the gun was post ban, the folding stock had been welded in the open position. Now that it is legal to do so, I took my handy Dremal tool and ground the heck out of the weld, but the folding stock still will not budge. I don't want to remove more metal but am unsure what to do.
Anybody know?

My best guess would be that whatever means they had for locking it open or closed is still in there. (i.e. like the little push-button on a hungarian AMD-65)
Maybe the button was replaced with a screw?? Ive never held a romanian but those boys seem to stay pretty consistant with thier designs.

This is just a guess, since I just replaced my wood stocks with folders. If you haven't taken the stock off yet, take out the back screw and see how long it is. The screw in the back, that came with my stocks, was way too long and I had to cut it down w/a dremel tool. So, I'm wondering if maybe they drilled out the metal so the screw would fit down all the way, and thus preventing the stock from folding. Just a thought, anyways. 0 -
I dont know what country you live in but here in the good ole USA there was never a ban on semi-auto's.Its bad enough the media and the anti-gunners keep talking about the ban on semi-auto' being lifted without gunowners miss-speaking about it,we had the ASSAULT WEAPONS BAN which banned too many goodies on military type weapons ,,,,,,,,THERE WAS NEVER A BAN ON SEMI-AUTO'S. 0 -
I don't know how long you have lived in the good ol USA, but in my USA there has only been ONE true "assault weaapons ban". That was in the 1930's when machine guns were outlawed for the average civilian. That "assault weapons" ban is still in effect.
The Humvees built and sold for civilian use looks like they might have been military vehicles but are only look-a-likes. Camo clothing that is made for civilian use that look like military clothing is only look-a-likes. AR-15s that are made for civilian use might look like the fully automatic or three-round burst M-16 assault rifle, but is still only a look-a-like. Putting a pistol grip on a rifle might make it a look-a-like for a true assault rifle, but it is still only a "look-a-like" and not a true assault rifle.
The "two-many goodies" you speak of only applied to semi-automatic guns. That is one reason I refer to the "semi-auto" ban.
Another reason I use this term is to avoid from falling into the trap the anti-gunners set and many gun people fall into. That of using "assault weapons" when referring to our semi-autos that only look like the military version (full auto or three round bursts with a single trigger pull) or have the dreaded, dangerous and lethal pistol grip, or folding stock, bayonet lug or flash hider.
Everytime you use the term "assault weapons" to refer to your civillian version of the AK-47 or AR-15, you are reenforcing the uneducated public mind that we gun owners REALLY are able to buy, own and use true "assault weapons". This hurts our cause, especially when the anti-gunners make their next push at a permenant ban on all our "assault weapons".
Therefore I use semi-auto ban, which is basically what it is.

Barto: you are correct in that the push button release is still there and seems to function quite well. But I still cannot get the folding stock to fold. I am guessing that the importer, to be SURE they didn't get into trouble, welded the hinge AND somehow fixed the internal part. Anybody know?

toolman: then there must be a pin through it because I have ground off all the weld I can see but the stock still won't budge. Is the weld visible?

i am really not sure where it would be on that model..i just know that some do pin and weld and they are very hard to find..sorry i could not help more..i will get back to you on this...send your e-mail just in case topic gets locked out.. still not sure though if you can legally have a folder on that rifle?? toolman9mm@yahoo.com 0 -

RugarNiner: thanks for that link. It is GREAT in showing me how to convert the welded stock. I never would have found that page without your tip. Thanks.
But before I make the coversion should I check to see if I am not running afoul of that law requiring the correct number of american parts?
