Bore lapping

C.E. Harris writes about bore lapping in Am.Rifleman March 1990, Buying and Shooting Military Surplus Rifles, so as to improve accuracy. Wish information regarding this proceedure on .22 caliber bores. Will any of you that have first hand experience on this proceedure for .22 caliber please help me with your comments as I wish to learn this proceedure. I am familiar with "fire lapping".     Wheeler Engineering makes a bore lapping kit that I'm considering buying.Does anyone have experience with bore lapping and is there a real noticeable benefit on older rifles? As usual I rely on the good advice from members before wasting time and money.

    I can't say I'm an 'Expert Bore Lapper', but I have done my share of polishing up older bores, or newly cut bores that are grabbing a lot of copper.

    Some folks will say it really doesn't apply to a 22. Many of the expert competition shooters will foul the bore after the piece has been cleaned, then not clean it for the match, or the season, and a couple say 'never' as long as it still groups well.

    Many folks follow the 'never' rule, but I have not been able to do it for more than a season. I do limit the barrel to a relatively light cleaning with just Hoppes while the rest of the gun gets a good cleaning before putting it away. So, you may have a great/medium/or poor bore that will shoot as good as it ever will after it 'fouls in'.

    to effectively smooth out some chatter marks or releive some crevices,..clean the barrel extremely well. Then,..using a TIGHT patch coated in JB's bore paste or even Flitz metal polish, stroke the entire length of the bore (USING A BORE GUIDE) and work back and forth maybe 30 strokes. Completely clean out the residue with TIGHT PATCHES. Then treat the bore to a little KROIL. Dry patch, shoot it a few times,..repeat process maybe 3 Times at best, no more. It works.[;)]

    why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....
