Imported 'Ban' items question

Does anyone have those regs that are quoted handy to link here or paste in?

What if you put a US made folding stock on a Romanian made receiver AK-47 style gun?

I read somewhere that a certain number of parts have to be US made? How many? Which parts?

And better yet - how the hell can anyone verify if screws and other small parts which look identical whether made in Romania or Rome, NY are from where?

Any help is appreciated.

    The Code of Federal Regulations & US Code are not available online, to my knowledge. However, I believe that the quote is from Federal Firearms Regulation Reference Guide (ATF P5300.4), which is on the ATF website. You can print the entire book (assuming you don't mind having your printer run all night), or you can request a printed copy from ATF.

    On the other hand, no one has EVER been arrested for violation of this particular statute. It's one of those regulations written because an idiot in Congress thought he had a brilliant idea of how to save the country. No one in ATF ever really gave serious thought to how they would enforce it when it was passed; today, with the threats to Homeland Security, you can bet it is the last thing on their minds. And, you are correct, no one can possibly determine where most gun parts were made, once they out of the box.

    But, if you are one of those people who mail your state a check every year for tax on your out-of-state Internet purchases, then I guess you can't ignore this regulation.

    There are 20 parts which qualify as "Evil foreign Parts". the Efps include barrel, muzzle attachments, trunion, upper reciever, lower reciever, operating rod, gas piston, pistol grips, buttstock, handguards, magazine body, follower, mag floorplate, hammer, trigger sear, disconector, bolt and bolt carrier. I think that is the 20. you cannot have more than 10 EFP's. Some guns only have 15-17 to start with. So you need to replace 5-7 parts dependig on the gun. All US made parts for foreign rifles I have run across have the MFG info on them. The cheap century parts have a small "C" on them. FSE are clearly stamped "FSE", Tapco puts their name on as well.

    The way ive been told, if you install a USA stock set on a imported AK, you have to change out [7] parts to comply!!! [1] is your back stock,[2] is the pistolgrip [3] is the whole forend, top and bottom,[4] could be the gas piston, [5]and [6] could be the fire control parts,[7] could be the gas tube, and another one could be a simple as using a USA made follower in the mag. the USA has to be raised letters and not stamped [into] the part!!! It has to have enough USA parts to be considered now a USA firearm!!!Same way with SKS. or keep them all original!!!

    Thanks for the answers. So let me ask: If it is all 'original' but made today would it be OK?

    In other words if you bought a Romanian AK style gun and it had a folding stock made in Romania would that make it legal?

    Sorry if this seems like beating a dead horse.
