Does Smith manufacture Dan Wesson?
Does Smith make the DW line of 1911's? A guy was blowing off today that my DW was indeed made by the same folks who made his SW 1911. Regardless I like the pistol. I was just curious as I was under he impression DW was a firm in and of itself.

Smith & Wesson and Dan Wesson are two entirely seperate companies.
However, with that said, S&W has made 1911 frames and other parts under contract for other companies for several years and it is possible that the DW frame, etc., was made by Smith ... however I think the guy was probably just "passing gas".
My only "knock" against DW is their quality is not to consistent. Nothing near as bad as Llama, but, they turn out a clunker here and there and the buyer goes through a couple returns, etc., before the matter is taken care of, and then it is usually by DW just replacing the pistol.
If you got a good one out of the box you have a pistol that will serve you well for many, many, years to come if you maintain it properly.

there was a thread on the Dan Wesson forum awhile back that covered this,some Dan Wesson and S&W 1911 frames were made by the same people.I have a pretty good collection of 1911's including a pointman I bought here on GunBroker from DW direct.Out of the box it would outshoot both my goldcup and my Wilson combat and for a fraction of the price.I would not have a problem buying another one, 0 -
In a word, no. DW and S&W are separate companies, period. S&W may supply some of the "raw" slides and frames for them just like they do for Kimber and others.

I bought the DanWesson on the recomendation from a friend who owns several Springfields and Kimbers, I am glad I did. My DW has been the best out of the box 1911 I have ever owned, I would definetly buy another without hesitation. Just my 2 cents.

I am very happy with my Patriot. It shoots very well. I too would buy another one without hesitation. This guy sometimes grits on a fella. When I bought my DW ,my choice, he tried to persuade me to get the Smith. I don't know why cause at the time he didn't have a 1911. A few weeks ago he got his SW and first point he had to make after he found out I still had my DW was, "Same company that made your DW made my SW, that being SW.

The story I was told and find to be the most believable about the DW 1911 pistols is; DW teamed up with or joint ventured their 1911 pistols with Chip McCormick. I find this believable due to the high amount of what are usually after market McCormick parts that they are using for standard production. None the less, my personal opinion is the DW 1911 is second to none in quality. I know of 2 individuals that after having handled and fired the DW dumped Kimbers and bought the DW. On another note, DW is the only company I am aware of that is using an external power extractor on their slides. Bottom line, given a choice I would definetly buy the DW first for the following reasons: cost and quality.
