Suggestions for .223 rifle
I'm thinking of buying a .223 rifle. I'd use it mainly for target shooting at my club range, but I also would like to have it on hand if I should ever decide to do some varmint hunting (as in coyotes or woodchucks). My preference would be for a sporting-type design, not a military or M-16 look. All the same, I guess I lean toward a semi-auto action, but might consider a bolt-action. Any suggestions as to makes and models?

If you want a semi-auto, the formerly banned items are about the most accurate. Baikal's Saiga is a sporterized AK, but is known for accuracy, and can be had new for $250 or less. As far as a bolt, Remington 700. Let us know what you decide. 0 -
I really like my Rock River Arms AR15 Varminter. I also picked up a Remington 78 (Rem. 700 budget model that replaced the 788) from Southern Ohio Gun (SOG) that was a used 'prison guard' rifle. Accurate as all #@**, and at a good price.
MUST consider the Savage rifles. GREAT out-of-the-box accuracy AND a better trigger than anything in the price range (that most are willing to tinker with). Savage has great barrels.
The Remington trigger is EXCELLENT can be adjusted by the shooter. It can also be 'mal-adjusted' to a dangerous point... by those wanting too 'fine' a trigger. I believe the Savage trigger has built-in safeguards.

REMINGTON 700 heavy barreled rifle would be my first choice followed by the Savage heavy barreled versions.
Semi-auto's (unless match grade) are good for slinging bullets but have no place in the accuracy game. JMHO
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

Semi auto .223 is fun, but not necessarily all that accurate. My mini 14 has a hard time holding a 5" group with quality ammo. The heavy barrel, tricked out ARs can be real tack drivers and then there is all the rest inbetween. Bolts action is probably the way to go if you want to compete at the local range and still use in the field. If you want to go with a bolt action the decision you need to address is action length. Different companies pack the .223 into a variety of actions ranging from standard(30-06), short(.308) and micro (.223} lengths. For the money I'm personally looking at the CZ 527 series of rifle. These are true mirco length actions in a variety of barrel lengths and stock styles for around $500. 0 -
My Bushmaster Varmint Special will shoot groups that can be covered by a dime with winchester "white box" varmint loads (~$12.50 a box of 40) all day long. This is the model with the 24" stainless barrel. It doesn't get much better.....

I found myself wanting similar things in a rifle last winter and ended up with a CZ 527 American. It's very accurate and the single set trigger is awesome. I've played around with a few loads and have gotten super accuracy while only trying a couple of combos so far.
