no where near a rem. 7600 in quality but still a good rifle for the price. if they work, they work well; if they don't work *&^%$. parts are available and the .35 rem. is one hell of a brush gun.

Have one in 30-30, belonged to my father-in-law. My daughter hunted with it several times. The scope mounts for a Rem. 742 interchange for it. Shoots very good and is accurate with 150 gr. bullets, won't shoot the 170's worth a darn.

I have always had something of a soft spot for Savage rifles, and the 170 series is no exception. Savage always tended to offer really nice, solid, utilitarian rifles and Shotguns, and there are few of their products that are not good, solid utilitarian pieces. In about 95% condition, I would say go for it in the 35 Rem. caliber as they are MUCH more desireable that the 30/30 version. Not the bell of the ball, but a very good "dancer" at any rate!

There were three different variations of the 170,The 30/30 rifle, the 30/30 carbine and the .35 Remington. The .35 being the rarest.I have all three.The.35 without the scope is worth (no matter what the books say) at least $300.00 in the condition you describe.I consider the Savage 170 cal .35 I own to be my most accurate rifle. If you don't want it I'll buy it.

Nothing wrong with the Redfield Widefield scope either. I have 3 and it's hard going back to a conventional round one.
