Savage 110 barrel exchange
I have read how easy it is to exchange the barrel of a Savage 110. The implication was you could switch caliber easily. I own a Savage 110 in .270. Is it possible to just switch the barrel to change its caliber?

You will need the correct wrench for the barrel nut, and a set of headspace gauges.
Of course, the diameter of the bolt face and the length of the action must be taken into consideration.

You really need a bbl vise or at least the hardwood blocks. You need an action wrench and the bbl nut wrench and headspace gauges. Savage uses some thread locker and also tightens them up very tight. I end up using a 24" long 1/2" drive breaker bar on the bbl nut wrench and cheater tubes on the breaker bar and action wrench. I clamp the hardwood bbl vise blocks and bbl in a hyd press. This supports the weight of the action and allows me to concentrate on tightening the nut without the bbl or action shifting which throws off the headspace. You still end up chasing your tail a little until the headspace is perfect.
If you don't plan on changing the caliber but once then you are better off to just pay a gunsmith to do it. If you want to use one stock and trigger to hunt deer, coyote, varmints, moose etc then you could easily justify the expense of the tools.
Swapping the bbls does require removing the scope but you can leave the trigger group on. If you stay in the same cartridge family you don't have to change the magazine or bolthead { i.e. 25-06, 270, 30-06, 35 Whelen etc }. Going from your 270 to a 223 would require the bbl, mag housing, follower, bolthead, extractor and possibly the ejector. The bbl and tools are the big expense, the mag bits and bolthead stuff is really cheap and you should keep some spare ejectors, extractors, and their springs and pins on hand. They are incredibly easy to replace.
If you buy a used bbl with iron sights they most likely will not line up on your receiver.
I bought an 06 off GB, bought the tools, bought a 223 sporter bbl off the 'Bay, put it all together and shot it a pretty good bit. Added a laminated, adj cheek rest off 'bay, added a 24x Leupold from same, added a 26" stainless fluted bbl from GB. Sold the 223 sprtr bbl. Still have the 06 bbl, the resale value is about zero.
When I decided to try some coyote hunting I finally managed to find a used 223 long action factory sporter rifle and bought it. I didn't want to mess with my "bench" gun. Just shot the coyote gun and it shoots great like all Savages I have seen.
What I really want is a single shot, long action in my bench gun. I feel the increased distance between the action screws makes the bedding stiffer but I want to stay with the 223 for the cheap ammo.

a couple years ago i got a "new" savage 30-06 barrel for $40.00 then had a gunsmith switch barrels for $40.00. i got the barrel from a guy who bought a 257 roberts barrel to replace his 30-06 for his daughter. the gunsmith said any standard long action caliber barrel would be an easy switch for the magazine.

Actually JUST got off the range from changing my Savage short action 110 from .22/250 to a .358, the "mother" barrel is .308.
This is what I do, in 12 easy steps, taking about 10 minutes, (if NOT changing bolt face)
1. Making sure the bolt face is the same for each cartridge head Old and new, if not change bolt face.
2. Remove stock and Scope.
3. Put Barreled action into the vice.
4. Use the Barrel Nut wrench and remove the nut and barrel.
5. Put nut onto 'new' barrel.
6. Put a very SMALL amount of never seize onto threads.
7. Screw assembly into the receiver.
8. I use a Full Length Sized piece of brass as a Go/No Go Guage BUT please NEVER do this,~~~ instead Please purchase the Go / No Go Guages.
9. Again by feel, close the bolt to the correct head-space as your new Go No Go Guages dictate.
10. Tighten Nut to between 50# - 60 # of force (by feel ).
11. Put action back into stock and put Scope on.
12. Go paper punching.0
