guns and disabilities

hello to the forum - i need some advice and maybe this is the place? my father has been an avid gun collector all his life. long story short - he is now diabled, in chronic pain, and depressed. i would like to refresh an 'old hobby' for him that he enjoyed 20 yrs ago - restoring antique/old/dirty guns. where would i find such items? what kind of handgun would be worth restoring - all antique/old ones? i know very little about them [:I] - any tips appreciated!

    what i want to do is find old/antique guns that he can restore - i am not sure where to find such items - flea markets?? i did not find any on ebay....

    and then, what are the laws are with me buying an old gun and mailing it to him in another state.

    i know he has a 4 barrel 22 mini gun? it is old - it is about 4 inches long - something about "blackjack dealer sleeves"???

    don't go to e bay, they are antigun,flea markets yes, gun shows yes, here on gun broker.com has a section for antque guns. i can't help pick out an old gun i'm a ak/tec 9 type of guy, but if you ask what is the value of a old 4 barrel pistol someone will respond. good luck with your quest.

    Welcome to the forum cofcup! Not knowing how severe your fathers limitations are, you might consider going to the local gun shop, most have wheel chair access. Roll him by all the used guns and see if this sparks an interest. If possible check your area for a Gun Show. Another option would be for you to go to the Gun Shop and see what kind of books they have on restoring, or firearms in general, and pick one up for your dad. I would try to find out if he has some interest first, before buying any gun. Good Luck, Regards Dave

    I doubt that this is a worthwhile project.

    I know some guys who did this sort of thing many years ago, but it is no longer feasible. Everyone at flea markets with an old gun thinks that it is worth a lot of money; parts for older guns are difficult or impossible to find; you can't send him guns, & he can't sell them, without his getting a Federal Firearms License & safe in which to store his guns. Just too much bureaucracy now.

    If it gets him out of the doldrums, have at it. But I think nmyers
    is pretty much spot on, the laws and the kooks in gov't have pretty much taken the fun and profit out of it. By all means, go to a couple gun shows WITH him, even if you have to trick him there. There always a few "wheelers" and unless it's different than the shows I go to they get treated the same as everyone else......they have to haggle like h-ll like the rest of us! You can always gift a gun to him or have him fix it up "for you". Try your local gun shop and tell them what you or better have him tell them what HE'S interested in finding. Maybe he'll take up target shooting or just plain have some pride in cleaning, refinishing. There are a lot of captured Mausers coming now as well as other ex-military. Sorry, I lost my dad a couple years ago and we just couldn't get him interested in hunting or shooting after his stroke. Time is short to bring some pride and self worth back.

    Perhaps dad might enjoy putting together a nice black powder kit gun? I don't know what would spark an ember for him but the cost is fairly low and it might be an inexpensive experiment compared to refurbing an old gun which takes a great deal of specialized equipment for blueing, machining etc. I agree with what I saw earlier...if it perks him up, give it a try! There are lots of disabled shooteers out there, and some who don't shoot but enjoy the historical significance! Whatever it takes!

    If your Dad likes older military rifles, you can buy him a .303 British Enfield for about $ 75.00 or a 6.5mm Italian Carcano for about $ 50.00 and he can putter with it to whatever extent he feels able. He could restock it, re-sight it, work the bolt, action, trigger, etc. It is pretty cheap as guns go and fun to shoot when he's done! He could do the same with Curio and Relic pistols. There are a few he could buy from Century Arms or Centerfire Systems for anywhere from $ 50.00 to about $ 250.00 in modern easy to obtain ammo. Parts for them are also reasonable...All this adding up to a happy PAPA!!! Good Luck and don't stop trying...You only have one Dad!
