Buckshot as round balls
does anyone have experience using buckshot as a rifle bullet?- Used with a reduced load, on the order of 10 grains or so of Unique and a 00 shot which seems to me is the diameter of a 338 Win, or is it 375?

I personally believe that standard lead Buckshot is too soft to use as single round ball projectile in a rifled barrel unless you are using it in a blackpowder firearm.

Loaded to 800-1000fps, a 00 buck, weighing slightly over 50 grs would be about perfect for using a 338 Mag either for plinking or for small game like squirrels. It would provide familiarization with a rifle that would be used later for big game. Getting a load would be easy, but it would seem to me to have two possible problems: likely needing a second crimp as on some pistol cartridges to prevent the ball from dropping down into the case, and as Bert indicated, standard buckshot may be too soft to make it through the 1-10" rifling., so the question regarding if anyone had done any work in this area. 0 -
I used to know a guy who did a lot of reloading. He was playing around a little with loading buckshot in a 30-06. He was shooting just the primer alone, and then 1 or 2 grains of powder. I don't know what type of powder.
I recall it was 00 buck, but I am not sure of the size.
Once he rezeroed the scope he said it was real accurate on squirrels in his backyard in the suburbs. He said it went pffffffft.0 -
HELLO 000 buck can be used in 38 special for light loads by just pressing in the case mouth with your finger but be on the look out for bullet movement in the case if you load more than one in the cyl.Also make sure that the load is not so light that the ball stays in the barrel upon firing .when you shoot the next shot you will bulge the barrel. In rifle such as 25/06 you can get buckshot to work to get rid of pest on a deer stand but because of large case you need pistol powder and after many test if you shoot these lead loads it will change the zero on the first full power load so I dont shoot them anymore 0 -
Seems to me, please correct me if I'm wrong, but a number of years ago,"AMERICAN RIFLEMAN", printed a article about using 00 shot for reloading .25 semi=auto pistols. Anyone remember??? 0 -
In the 1980's Remington sold a .38 special "multiball load" with two 70 gr 000 buckshot (catalog #R38SMB). It worked well, with just a couple of inches of dispersion at close-to-medium range.

That would be kind of tough to do... 00 buck is .33 caliber. Now, if you were to use No. 3 buck, it is the correct diameter (.25 caliber).
