socom 16 M1a problem??

I have recently bought a Springfield socom 16 M1a, and I love it! I put an Aimpoint on it and it shoots nice. Great for presentation drills and great at Med to long distancs with it. I was dinging steel at 780 yds with the Aimpoint. But alass there is a down side. I have noticed that once I put 2-3 mags though it in a short time period it starts to malfunction. Failure to extract. It will fire but not extract that last fired round. It is so bad that i have to almost stand on the operating handle to extract the spent case. I have inspected the spent case and can no obvious reason. My first thought is that it could be a fault due to over-heating because of the shorter barrel...or even worse improper head spacing.     What ammo are you using?

    Have you cleaned the chamber with a brass USGI chamber brush?

    308, I'm sure someone is waiting to help you but it would be helpful to know what ammo you are using.

    The first ammo put though it was 168 gn Austrailan (sp?) ammo. Then durring my presentation drills i went to a cheep Indian crap ammo, then it was 175 gn Match ammo, and finally back to my Aust. and Indian ammo. Durring all three shooting sessions at about 2-3 to maybe 4 mags into the session this problem started. All three types of ammo.

    Mabye try another lubrication like Miltech for example. It doesnt dissapate under harsh conditions like some others. Just a thought. It could just be because its in the initial break in period. Mabye you should shoot less rounds per outing and clean after every shooting.

    Good luck, thats one nice rifle and it shouldnt be giving you any trouble.

    i know 175gr is the rage these days, but it may be hotter to get the bullet flying. try 147gr and stick with usa stuff. that foreign stuff may be loaded to milspec. your gun may be built to chamber over the counter american 308.

    Could have a bent op rod or clearance between op rod and op rod bushing. next time she binds pop it apart and check if it's binding with gloves on of course

    Have you lubed your gun?

    Those M1A's like Garands need some grease where the bolt rides.

    I would definitely stay away from import ammo in a good gun like this. Agree with those who mention using a good lubricant for the action. Have a gunsmith look your gun over if these don't help solve your problem.

    I just picked up a new Springfield Socom and will be shooting it for the first time tomorrow. I will let you know if I have a similar problem. I will be using 147 grain FMJ.

    The problem seems to be with an over expanding case in the chamber. It could be the ammo i guess, but the same malfuntion happened with match ammo too.
    we used to have a similar problem with our .50's (Barrett). On the .50 cals, the case would be torn off due to an over expanded case. the armor said that it was because of improper head spacing. but the problem that i am having is not constant like that was. it seems to be relevant to the number of rounds i fire or the rate of fire.

    Your gun sounds as though it's pretty tight and not worn in yet. If it was a head space problem I'd assume that the problem would occur with nearly every shot. If it was a defective chamber (i.e. out of round) the problem would again show on every shot.

    Lube it up, shoot the hell out of it, inspect the casings....if there is no problem with the casings then I'd have to say it's just a tight gun that needs broken in.

    "...an over expanding case..." Cases don't "over expand". They expand to the chamber diameter then retract a tick. Brass does that. Brass cases are elastic. If you're at all concerned with the headspace and this is highly unlikely the cause, check it. What are you using for lube? Grease, not oil is what you should be using and in the right places.
