deer rifle choice
I am going to add a new caliber rifle to my collection for this deer season. I have .243,7mm-08,.308 already. My shoulder won't take more recoil than the .308. I am considering a 25-06,.260,in a bolt or maybe the new remington pump in 35 whelen. Most if not all the deer I take are less than 200 yards so I don't really need something that flat.As always thanks for your replies.

I think you need a shorter range brush gun. Maybe a t/c rifle chambered in .44 mag or .357mag. Or you could go lever action. Mini-30 would be nice also.

Ben is right you need a good brush gun, everyone has to have a nice lever action rifle in 30-30win. Preferably a Marlin. If you just have to have a new rifle 25-06 or 204 Ruger maybe a 257 roberts. Come to think of it this list could get very looonnnggg.[:D]

I'm guessing your 308 is bolt action. The only 308's I have are military and/or gas operated and are very easy on the shoulder. (I get some comments from the club when I bring 'those ugly guns' to the camp.) The most uncomfortable guns I shoot are light lever actions, but I still shoot them. From your collection, you may think the old 30-30 is a little weak, but it does the job. Similar guns in 44 mag are popular in brushy areas with 100 yd shots, and folks with hog leg pistols too. I sold my mini - 30 to a fella that really wanted it. It is a nice gun, but mine did not group very well, and you really don't have a lot of room to work up a 'sweet load' in that round (less versatile than the 30-30 IMHO). Add something with a big hole to your collection for your short range hunts. Enjoy shopping for your new gun ('aka hoppes foreplay').

+1 for the 30/30 idea. Get either a Marlin 336 or if you reload, try an older Savage 340 in 30/30. This bolt gun would allow you to use a wider variety of bullets without detenation in the tube. Also consider a Savage 99 in .300 savage. 0 -
todd, if you don't want any more recoil than the .308 generates, stay away from the .35 Whelen. It is a fairly fast, heavy bullet shooter that would kick pretty good! Never shot one, but the physics for considerable recoil are there.

If you really are recoil sensitive like I am, you will love .257 Roberts. Good for any deer out to about 250 yards if you put the bullet in the boiler room, and it is REALLY easy on the shoulder. I use Hornady Light Magnum bullets (only spire point factory loaded bullets out there) and I think it his less recoil than a .243. [^] 0 -

The 35 Whelen in any resonable loading will kick a lot more the a .308 loaded with 180g slug. I personally have owned 3 25-06's and they are long range great. Recoil is low and accuracy is high. I know it is overkill but I like takeing my 25-06 lightweight out for varmint/cyote hunting. From what you state, I'd say go with the 25-06 or a lever. If you go lever don't forget the model 99 Savare or the model 88 Winchester. Both of these will beat up on most of the lever guns on the market today. The only exception is the Marlin in 45-70. I keep thinking I should send my m99 Savage .308 out and have it rebarreled in .358 winchester. Still the .358 slugs will kich about like the Whelen. Oh well, the sholders the limit...... 0 -
the 25-06 is my favorite caliber, its great for deer, and I also use it varmint hunting, its easy on recoil also. If you look at the 260 its ballistics are really close to the 25-06 and you can load up to 140gr bullets, the 25-05 up to 120gr, i dont think you could go wrong eather way. If you want a short action lighter rifle go with the 260, if a long action is ok and you want to hunt more varmints go with the 25-06. The 75gr V-max's are great for coyoties.
The 260 will be my next rifle, but I'm not giving up my 25-060
