Mauser question
I've had an old Mauser for some time. It's a Model 1909 Argentino and I believe it to be unfired. It's definetly mint with all matching serial numbers. I always had the intention of having it made into a sport rifle but I guess I no longer see the need. I suspect it would be fun to shoot. If so, does anybody know what ammo would be correct? Then, should I shoot it or keep it unfired?

In looking for a mount for my Czech/98 Mauser - Midway lists two different mounts one for a Mauser 98 and one for a Mauser 98 FN. What is the difference between these two models?

The Siamese Mauser will NOT fit the standard Mauser 98 stock. The slant box magazine is the big problem and the Siamese is slightly shorter than the standard 98 Mauser. It is the same length as the intermediate Mausers such as the Mexican.
If you haven't started the conversion of the Siamese, I would heartily suggest that you stop considering it. It's a waste of a good action. There have been a very few gunsmiths that have accomplished this successfully. It requires quite a bit of fitting and feeding manipulations that most can't cope with.
A better suggestion is to go with a wildcat on the 30-40 Krag case since there will be virtually no fit or feeding problems.

He's also right about the Siamese being a great action on which to build many wildcats.
BUT
if you are like the millions of us who crave a strong, pretty bolt action in .45-70 or .45-90, the Siamese is the no. 1 choice.
As far as it being a difficult task, I would say that it's not any harder to make one work perfectly than any other home-built rifle. The bulk of the work is in the barrel,- the threading, chambering, contouring, sight mounting, headspacing. In and out of the lathe, in and out of the vise, taking off another thousandths off the shoulder, etc. is where the time-consuming work comes in.
Tokyo Arsenal did 95% of the work on the action and Richards Microfit does 90% of it on the stock and all we have to do is tweak them a little so they fit.
P-14 Enfields make great .45-70s and .45-90s, but they're a tad longer than necessary and you should save them for the big jobs.
I think nononsense could be considered among the top 10 experts on this board. I always read and soak up everything he writes. If he were to shoot at sealed five gallon cans full of water with, say a 7mm Rem Mag and a .45-70 with a 405 grain bullet at 2150 fps, he would quickly join the multitudes of .45-70 worshippers.0 -

Although I don't consider myself to be a worshipper of the 45-70, I am at least respectful of it as a very good cartridge. I have built and continue to use, several variants for specific uses. Single shots mostly, for long range target work, along with a couple of lever guns (Model 71 in 450 Alaskan) for dark woods elk and deer. I have to admit that I haven't shot any water pails, though.[:D]
I understand the desire for a well detailed, bolt action rifle, but I fail to understand the need to use the Siamese for the 45-70. Once the bolt, rails and follower have been adjusted to allow for 100% reliable feeding of the longer and fatter 45-70, the receiver will not feed any other cartridge combination. It is a 45-70 forever, basically. I think that's what bothers me the most. I can think of several other cartridges that I would prefer to use the Siamese for and yet have the ability to re-barrel to another cartridge with a minimum of fuss.
If I need a big 45 caliber, I'll use a standard Mauser 98 and go with a .458 Win. Mag. Or if I need a more powderful .458, I'll use a P-14 and go for the Lott.
Sure, this is merely a difference of opinion and that's how it should be. It's good for discussion!

ER Shaw ( of Bridgevill, Pa. ) does Siamese 45-70 conversions for a very reasonable price. The bigist problem in feeding, after Shaw does their bit, is getting the mag follower just so. 0
