Bullet tumble

I was doin' a little shooting yesterday with my Remington mod. 700 .222 rem mag.Actually I only shot it 3 times.The first shot was dead center bullseye(100 yds.)The next 2 shots hit the paper sideways.
What would cause this?Shot out?Ammo?I'm shooting new ammo by Collins Cartridge Company out of Conroe,Texas.55gr,JSP.I had a so-called gunsmith tell me a few years ago that the barrel was shot out,but,the rifling looks pretty good to me.(This guy was also offering a pretty good price for it to add to his 700 collection.)

Any help is appreciated.

    Hello Bob,

    It appears the bullets are not spinning/stabilizing properly... which could be caused by a worn bore & rifling, or by undersized bullets. Have you checked the bullet diameter of that ammo with a micrometer? The bullet weight is definitely not the problem. I have a hard time believing that a Remington Model 700 barrel in 222 Rem Mag could be shot out badly enough that it causes the bullets to tumble. I have shot a few thousand rounds through my Rem M700 in 222 Rem Mag, and it still makes a ragged 3-shot hole at 100 yards (if I am having a good day that is[:)]). You could always have the bore scoped & slugged.

    Other possible sources of your problem:
    1.Bullets with bad BASES. Nose of bullet will conribute to better or worse accuracy. Bullets with bad bases or tipped in case will give tumblers.
    2. Under-powered loads will not give sufficient velocity and bullet will not spin fast enough.
    3. Excess freebore may allow bullet to tip before engaging rifling.

    Perhaps the bullets themselves might be assymetric and designed to tumble/keyhole?
