Remington Model 48

Friend ask me to look at his favorite hunting shotgun, a rem model 48 12ga. He has had a Gunsmith install a new ejector and now the action will not feed a shell properly. It will feed about half-way then stick in the barrel. Any suggestions? I have taken it apart and oiled it up abit, it was very dry, but can not find any parts that are out of place or broken. What do you think?

    Many times new parts have to be fitted/tweaked before they will work, specially on the older guns. The ejector MIGHT have been made oversize deliberately to account for this. It is also possible that the WRONG ejector was installed.

    Have your friend take it back to the guy who installed the ejector. Unfortunately lot of these guys who try to pass themselves off as Gunsmiths nowadays, are just parts changers. Either they don't know how, or don't want to take the time to "FIT" a part correctly. My 2 Cents.

    12819, the ejector on the '48 is part of the barrel. If you look at the barrel extension you will see a projection that kicks the hull out. The extractor is hook-shaped and is in the bolt, right side. It fits into a slot in the barrel when the barrel is in battery. When the gun is fired, the barrel and bolt travel to the rear; then the barrel and bolt unlatch and the barrel goes forward; the bolt is stationary for an instant, thereby pulling the shell out of the chamber, and as the barrel goes forward further the ejector hits the shell base and it is kicked out. If the extractor is riding over the shell coming from the magazine, it might cause a jam, but that seems to be unlikely (to me).I think rufe-snow has given you correct advice. Maybe it's a bad part. Anyway, take it back to the gunsmith and have him check it out.

    I believe Rufe is correct. However, don't return it if the smith does not know how to fit it!!
