winchester 70 carbine

my friend has a winchester 70 carbine 30-06. i took it out to the range and with some cheap remington 180gr ammo it did 2" groups at 100 yards easily. i suspect it could do better with better ammo and a more solid rest (i was just using sandbags ) it has a leupold vari x II 2-7 on it and he will sell it for $300. is this a good deal?

also, i want to reblue and refinish the stock, can i remove the stock or would that mess up the bedding? what would be the best way to refinish this rifle?

    The only thing I tell you about the serial number is that it was made after 1981. Between 1984 and 1986 Winchester made a Model 70 Lightweight Carbine. If the price you gave includes the scope, it is a very good buy. If not it is a toss-up; you call it.

    you sure could spend more that 300.00 on the reblue-refinish job.$600.00 will buy a new Winchester.

    I WOULD RATHER BE DUCK HUNTING.

    I am in complete agreement with duckhunter... you are looking at spending $300 for the gun, and then it will run you at least that much more to properly refinish the steel & stock. The real question is why do that when you can buy a brand new Model 70 for that amount[?] Even after having it properly refinished, it will still only be worth about $450 (with the scope).

    It depends. If you are looking for a shooter, buy it. If you are looking for a looker, keep looking.
    With that scope, I'd buy it and never look back.
