Intratec Cat-9 questions and comments

Hi all, this is my first post here!

I have an Intratec Category-9 semi-auto handgun that I am in the process of customizing. The slides on these guns are two-piece deals that were welded at the factory. I am having that weld "revisited" for piece of mind, because Intratec had the weld ground flush to make it look like a one-piece slide. I would rather see it and know that it is burned in right. I have a professional welder who is going to do the TIG work but we are trying to find out what the slide is made of. Anyone here know?

I bought the gun new and have put around a 100 rounds through it so far, with no jams or malfunctions. I lightened the trigger pull and polished the ramp - so far. Everything I put through it so far have been ball rounds, but I have some 135g Federal Hydra-Shok Self Defense ammo that I am planning to try soon.

In addition to welding the slide and having it refinished my plan is to make a laser site mount, and I am looking into having a stainless slide cut for it, if I still like it after another 500-1000 rounds.

    Hello I would rethink the reweld.I know tig doesnot put in as much heat as stick welding but if this gun was heat treated you will not know what you have after welding on it. quote:"PRAISE THE HARD BALL GUN"

    Yea, What Perry said.

    You did not mention a heat treatment after the re-weld. You will probably introduce residual stresses from the welding that can be problems if not relieved with some form of heat treatment.

    If you can burn a couple hundred " +p+ " rounds through it with no signs of a failure, that should relieve your worries.

    Ditto what drobs sez below. I was not sure what pistol we were talking about..... point and shoot ..no need for laser ... probably no need for any sight. If it fires every time you pull the trigger for the whole magazine, you've gotten what you paid for.

    Wasn't this gun intended to be an inexpensive pocket pistol? I can't see why you would want to add a laser to this gun. A quality laser would be almost as big as the gun. To each his own but I can't see putting that much $$ into what's at best a $200 gun. Also once you modify that gun you kill all inherant collectablility of the gun. Not many people are going to give you what you will have put into it.

    Then again, I probably have a $1000 invested in my $300 AK.

    Edit: I should add I do like that Cat-9 pistol and remember wanting one when they 1st came out. I'm thinking that you may want to check out those Rorhbah(sp) 9mm pistols, those will at least hold their value a little better starting out at $600 ea.

    Intertec jobbed out much of there parts I took a few of there guns apart and found they were made by different companys some of which were not even in the gun buisness, I have no idea but it has to be some type of pot metal , that is what gives it the weight ...it was a copy of a gun made by one of the many designers in Israel , be carfull as pot metal doesnt take well to most metal...hope this helps

    Thanks for the feedback guys, and yup that's the gun.

    Post-weld heat treating wouldn't be a problem. That's why the welder wants to know what type of metal the slide is made of. Then he can determine what filler to use and what exact techniques to implement.

    I know it really doesn't make sense to sink a ton of money into a cheap gun, but that's human nature for ya. Same as putting 50K+ into an old classic car to bring it up to modern standards when you could easily go to the dealership and...

    We could have it chemically analyzed but that would really drive the cost up, and might make it more feasible to just have the stainless slide cut.

    You need to have a site host your pictures.

    I host mine at http://www.gunsnet.net (membership & uploading pics is free)

    Then once you have em up loaded you can link them on to here by right clicking on the pic, getting the properties, and copying the URL address. Then click on this icon icon_editor_image.gif which will put [ i m g ] [ / i m g ] on your message box, then you can paste your address between the two brackets.

    Example:

    [ i m g ]http://forums.gunbroker.com/icon_editor_image.gif[ / i m g]

    leave the spaces out.

    I forgot that I actually have a manual for the Cat, because I don't keep the original case in the gun safe with the gun. Anyway, it did offer this description, "...made of quality high tensile strength heat-treated steel." So you guys were right on about the heat-treating.

    I did register at Guns Network but I want to try to hotlink to my Image Station account first. Just a blurry pic of my polished ramp to test the waters...
