25-06 Savage 110

I'm looking at buying a new Savage 110 in 25-06 for my wife, but Savage only makes the 25-06 with 22" barrels. From what I've read, the 25-06 really needs a 24" barrel. Will I lose much accuracy and velocity from a 22" barrel? It doesn't make sense why Savage would only produce the 25-06 with 22" barrels if it needs a 24". I already have a Savage 116 in 300 win mag and have been very satisfied. Plus I'd like to try out the new accutrigger. Anyone have any experience with the Savage 110 in 25-06?

    I have shot a 25-06 for years it is a Remington modle 700.A friend bought a Browning madalion with the short barrel,and it couldn't come close to grouping like my Modle 700 at 300 yards...it did do better at closer ranges,but the main reascon people shot the 25-06 here in my area is thier ability to make long shots at a speed...I think you would be better off with longer barel//Oro

    the 25-06 does need a 24" or longer barrel, I have never understood myself why savage and others put a 22" on them, and with the shorter barrel you will have much worse muzzel blast. 25-06 is my favroite caliber you will like it much better with a 24"

    The 25-06 loses about 100 fps in the shorter "22 barrel, as opossed to the "26 pipe. This has litle or virtually nothing to do with the accuracy of the gun...it is, however, quantifiable in terms of FPS at the muzzle. With the twist rate of most of the factory barrels in this caliber, you will only need about "14 to "16 inches of barrel to spin stabilize this round with its' various bullet weights. Does it make a LOT of sense to go to a "22 barrel?, I wouldn't if I were designing the gun, but the 100 fps is fairly neglible, and that's why Savage and others have gone to the shorter pipe to reduce production time/cost and make the rifle a little handier in the field. The muzzle blast issue...roughly the same as the 22 vs 24 inch barrel arguement. Sure, it WILL affect the amount of still burning gasses, but by how much?!?! I feel the 25-06 is a great cartridge, and would be best seved with a 24 or 26 inch tube, but I would have the little lady shoot both to determine which she can handle before I invested the money to find out the hard way. My honest opinion...there is such a small difference that I would not be terribly put off with 2 inches less barrel in this case! I would PREFER a "24, but would likely be just as happy with the "22.

    Thanks for the info, guys. I had her hold one last night to see if she likes the feel and she really liked the weight and feel of it. We'll probably head up to a shop with a range next week, to try a few out.

    My TIKKA has a 22" Bbl and shoots .45" groups at 100yds. I chroned the reloads, and they are within 50fps of what the book says they should be out of a 24" bbl. So I'd say, which ever gun you like the feal of, buy.

    My brother picked up a Savage 110 in 25-06 for our step dad, it was made before the accu-trigger. He put a 3x9x40 Leupold on it and it shoots sub MOA groups with ease, we all liked it so much my brother almost couldn't give it to him! Well regardless the gunshoots great we all like it, my neice has used it to take 2 elk, a buffalo, and 2 antelope and the antelope were ultra long shots....
    Get your wife that Savage and you both will love it.
    PS: My brother has a Savage in .204 with the accu-trigger and really likes it. Wishes he could put that trigger on all his guns.

    If you handload you'll probably find no appreciable difference between a 22 or 24" barrel. Different powders will also offer interesting results.

    As to an earlier post, the length of barrel needed to stabilize a bullet is irrellivent - the bullet will have the same rate of spin if it goes throug 1 inch of barrel or 100 inches. No difference.

    25-06 is a great cartridge and the 110 is a great gun. Lots of caliber conversions as well.
