If your friend Stumbled onto his Dads P-38 and his dad doesn't know about this, then your friend shouldn't be worring about the history and value.
If your friend Stumbled onto his Dads P-38 and his Dad knows about this, then he should be askin his Dad about the History and Value.

Just my thoughts on your question.

It was made in Germany by Mauser (code byf) during WWII (44).

Value depends upon condition, finish, replacement parts, accessories, etc., but these are not rare. If you do a Smart Search on completed Gunbroker auctions, I'm sure that you will find several in similar condition.

byf44 (Mauser made in 1944) is one of the most common P38s with a total production of about 150,000 guns.

Value according to the Standard Catalog of Military Firearms, 2nd Edition:

    Exc. - $700
    V.G. - $400
    Good - $300
    Fair - $250

Add $100 for dual tone finish (combination of blue & grey parts)
