light plinking loads for 35 rem
hi
does anyone know if i can work up a light plinking load for cal 35 rem? i have a marlin 35 rem lever action. and any of you guys or gals that have one. know the factory loads kick like a mule.
i'd like to find some light plinking load so my 12 yr old nephew can shoot it. he only weighs 95lbs soaking wet.
i'm also wonderin if i can use 357 pistol bullets to get the bullet weight down. 35 cal is .358
there is not a lot of bullet choices for 35 rem. if anyone knows i'd sure be gald if you could pass the info on to me

You can use the .357 pistol bullets in that rifle. Load data should be obtained from a reliable load manual. I used to have a Contender in 35 Rem, so I know about the recoil with full loads with heavy bullets. Light bullets will reduce the recoil a lot. 0 -
I have been loading for the 35 Remington for about 35 years and do not personally like the pistol bullets in the rifle. For a reduced load I would use Speer 180 grain Flat-SP bullet (#2435) that is listed in their #12 Manual with SR4759 (IMR) powder and a CCI200 primer. They list 20.0 grains at 1653fps and 18.0 grains at 1499 fps. using a Winchester casing. This loading would even be acceptable for hunting use as long as you keep the distance within reason. 0 -
I've used 158 gr. pistol bullets in this chambering for years to prolong the life of my old Remington model 8 take-down. I generally have to cycle the bolt manually as with all old recoil semi-auto's, there is not enough recoil generated by this combination to cycle the action. The REAL downside to this is the accuracy...just never been up to par regardless of what bullet powder combo I ever used. The accuracy load for me involbves about an 80% of maximum chargs using Remington 200 gr. SP's in front of 4895. This does recoil a fair bit but seems to tighten up the groups and cycles the action. I would check the twist rate of the rifling to see what the lightest possible bullet weight would be and then start experimenting up from lowest starting load. The different twist rate and action type I think would be a little more conducive to finding a nice light pistol bullet load for your lever gun.
