sorry to butt in but is there a reason you didn't say some type of semi auto? Beretta 391, Benelli , Remigton 1100 or 1187 , Winchester ????? 0 -
Hull recovery
Two choking selections (I've seen stations where 1 target was taken at 10-15yd, and the second at 45-50yd, very common with "fur/feather stations.
Reloading speed (I've seen stations where 3 pairs were released as fast as the kid could reload the machine. Stuffin ammo into a auto loader between pairs is a real joy [:(] )
MTBF is lower with a O/U (failures will always occur at the worst possable time/place)
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -
The few time I've shot sporting clays it seems that the people that set up the stations do this on purpose. Near shot and far shot, middle range and middle range, close and closer. I carried a set of choke tubes with me and I changed them several times. I see O/Us a lot more than semis. Also there is the lack of the cha-chang in an O/U, versus a semi.

The under $1000 is going to be tougher of late but look around, once in a while you get lucky and find a citori or red label, as bobski says for under a grand, rarer lately. Do look at the Beretta white wing or black wing. These used to come in around a grand, no frills, plain wood but if a Beretta fits you, they are also a good
shotgun. Less expensive, look at the sporting clays model of the Baikal and some of the newest Turkish imports. They have improved their quality quite a bit, tho it will be tougher to get the money back out of them. There are always people looking for a good, used Ruger, Browning or Beretta.0 -

It is what ever you shoot the best with. I would look to friends and family that shoot shotguns to try their guns. I don't mean shoot it 10 times and call that good enough. I would put atleast 2 boxes of ammo through each to see what felt best to you. There are not much differences between all the pumps, semi-autos, SxS, over-n-under ect... they all operate very similar. The more you try the more you will like. I would say find out which style of shotgun you like the most then find the brand that you like the best.
