The Shotgun in the Movie "bullit"
I was watching the old Steve McQueen movie "Bullit" last night and was curious about the the make of shotgun the hit man was using.
The wounded cop described it as a Winchester pump.
Then during the high speed chase the hit man was loading it and when he turned it over i saw it had a hammer.
Just what kind of shotgun was this??
Was it really a Winchester and if so what model??
I dont recall ever seeing a pump shotgun with a hammer.
The movie was made in 1968.
I am sure all of the curious will storm BlockBuster tonight to check this movie out.[:)]

Probably a Model 1897. I never saw one without a hammer. Very popular gun in its day, I had one in the 60's, but it was made in the 40's. 0 -

I asked this question some time back in regard to the revolver Steve McQueen carried in that movie. Some say Colt, Detective Special and some say 3" S&W M19. Any guesses? 0 -
i believe it was a model 97 takedown as i seem to remember the bad guy putting the two pieces together in the hall before shooting the other guy., but it was a winchester 97 for sure

Mustang- you may already know, but there were two Mustangs and two Chargers used in the film; in 1969 one of the Mustangs sold at auction for a little over $5000. 0 -
One of the mustangs was Steve's personal car before he was even picked to star in the movie. But putting the 600x13 tire on it for the smokie burnout was kind of hokie. If you dont believe me look at the width of the black mark 0 -
There were two 1968 Ford Mustang Fastbacks used for the movie. One was destroyed in the filming and the #2 is sitting in a barn some place in the South. The car is reportedly in disrepair and the owner will not allow pictures, display, or sell the vehicle. Even Steve McQueen tried to buy the car back in the late 70's but the owner would not budge
The two original cars had 15-inch American Torque Thrust wheels and 390 hp motor. The wheels were supposed to be McQueens choice. McQueen also had a Nardi steering wheel installed in the car. The 390 was not up to the chase scenes in the movie and had to be tweaked by carburetor and ignition modifications. Since the car was a jumping car in the movie the suspension was modified by reinforcing the shock towers, springs, and installing Koni shocks. A stock shifter was used.
The Bullitt Mustangs exhaust was a bad ass growl. The exhaust was modified by removing the transverse muffler ahead of the factory dual glass pack resonators, then crude tailpipes were run from the glass packs to the rear of the car. All the chrome was removed from the exterior of the car or painted black.
In 2001 Ford made a limited edition vehicle - you guessed it - the Mustang Bullitt in honor of Steve McQueen and the movie. It is one hot machine. I am owner of #4199 out of 5000.
The McQueen family recieved the first four or five production cars which are apparently unnumbered and say McQueen. Chad McQueen (Steve McQueen's son) received the first Bullitt production car.
By the way, it was Model 97.

Post Script,
Ford actually owned both cars and loaned them to Warner Bros. for the movie. When the movie was finished both cars went back to Dearborn, MI. One went to the crusher, the other was sold to a studio employee (not the current owner).

yep a model 97 . i happen to have one very low serial # made in 1900.
and the heck with the mustang.. that dodge charger was much cooler.
