25 wssm vs 25-06

Just read in an article of G&A there is virtually no difference twix the 2 aforementioned rounds other than the bolt length.
If there is no difference...why develop the 25 wssm?

    Something new for the "techies" but also it can be put in a short action rifle whereas I believe the 25-06 because of cartridge length must be in a long action. This makes (the short action) mountain type rifles that weigh less as well as some lever actions,auto loaders and pumps also a reality that is difficult(hence expensive) to
    do in 25-06 as well. But mainly it's the weight and length of action i.e. the weight and length of the overall gun can be smaller. Also, the bolt stroke is shorter,faster espec. those with small arms and from what I've read it's a more efficient cartridge as well. Less powder, less recoil, same ballistics.

    Winchester, or whatever they are called now, in their full length "classic" action can fit up to the 375H&H class of cases. This means that the standard calibers, 30-06 and such, weigh more because of the excess metal. They are also making the "short" actions which are for the .308win line of cases. These weigh less then the old "standard" length actions. So by packing the 270win into the 270WSM they are giving us rifles that aren't as bulked up as they might be. Also as many folks buy only a few rifles in their life the arms companies have to keep comming up the new and improved or they would go out of business.

    Here is the reasoning that I posted a couple of months ago when a similar question was asked.

    Let's think about this for a minute. If you were FN/Belgium and owned Browning/Winchester Arms would you put money into a 25 WSM that could fit into any of the existing receivers in your line with appropriate mechanical/machining changes or...

    Would you put money into the 25 WSSM which would utilize the receiver that was specially designed to handle just the WSSM line of cartridges which up until now, numbered only two.

    Guess what? They opted to expand the line of cartridges that utilize the special receiver so that they could spread out the cost of R&D to 3 cartridges instead of just two. The chance of monetary success was improved by a substantial amount no matter if you personally like the cartridge or not. Bean counters like this stuff.

    Then include that facts that there are a bunch of quarter bore fanatics out there and they like most new things that have anything to do with the .25 caliber. And, if you can get 25-06 ballistics out of a shorter case with a similar capacity and save the weight and still achieve good balance and handling characteristics in a smaller receiver, you have a larger market interest. Then, the WSSM's have that certain 'whiz bang' charm that will gather some more folks into the fold and sell more rifles and ammunition.

    There are lots of posters out there on the forums that don't like the WSSM's or the WSM's either, but they haven't ever fired one let alone bother to own one to test. They keep mouthing the anti-short magnum garbage like a mantra because they have no personal experience with one and can't speak for themselves.

    It's about marketing. You have to keep introducing 'new' ideas to appear fresh. All industries do the same thing. Recycle and repackage.
