I would suggest he get a used Remington model 870. If he gets serious about hunting he will want to trade up very soon.

Like Hehschel suggested, a Rem 870 would do fine, maybe in .20 guage.
Low recoil, lots of ammo available, even slugs for deer.

I would suggest a Mossberg 500 combo. He can get the slug barrel for the big game and also a field barrel for small game. I believe this still comes in .20ga also.

God gave us all a gift. Have you found yours yet ?

What you've proposed is about the maximum on flexibility providing that a single shot is acceptable. I have no first hand experience with the Rossi "Triple Play", but a fair amount of first hand knowledge on other Rossi guns that indicates that they are good value guns.

The 22 will allow your friend to practice as well as hunt small game or varmints, the 243 is a good deer round, and the 20 guage can work for birds-n-bunnies, etc., as well as a slug gun for deer. And being single shot he will have to learn to be basically a "one-shot" hunter instead of a "blaster" which is always a good thing regardless of how many shots your gun holds.

If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!
