Kimber or Weatherby?
I am looking for a new hunting rifle to hunt whitetail - elk.
I am thinking about the kimber montanna 8400 300WSM. I have also looked at the Weatherby SBGM in 7mm and it was truly a sweet rifle.
Anyone with any opinions?

The WSM cartridges are overrated in my opinion. I'd go with the 7mm.

I've got a kember in 7mm/08 and a Weatherby MkV in 300 Wea. If I were you I'd get the Weatherby. The Kember is nice, but for the money not really up to snuff. The weatherby is truly a bank vault type rifle, and the caliber is much better for elk compared to the 300 wsm. I have heard the 300 wsm is all belt buckle and no cows!!
SEMPER FI MAC, SEMPER FI0 -
Weatherby rifles are legendary. But the 7mmWeatherby cartridge has never made any sense to me. If you compare specs and case dimensions it is very similar to the 7mmRemMag. Between the two I'd rather have the 7mmRemMag because it is available everywhere at reasonable prices in a vast variety of loadings. 7mmWeatherby is comparitively expensive and limited in availablity and loadings. Still to each his own and any excuse for a new deer rifle is a good'n. 0 -
Some people buy Ford Escorts, for mileage, some people buy Corvettes for CLASS and STYLE!!! I swear by Weatherbys and Corvettes[8D][8D][8D][8D]

Of the two "Name" brands ... Weatherby!
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
both are great rifles . for the calibers i would go with the 300wsm . but how often are yuo going to elk hunting ?
i just dont see the need for the 7mm weatherby . the 7mm stw has very similar velocities , while with the heavier bullets has better velocity and with the lighter being about 50fps behind the weatherby. and then you get to the 7mm RUM and that will kill both of them . and then there is the lazzeroni magnums which ... are INSANE . and for the 300's i would go with the win mag instead because of its ability to use the heavier/longer bullets better .
hope this helped .
P.S. they will both do what you want .0 -
"...Weatherby rifles are legendary..." Yep, especially at being grossly over priced. Nothing wrong with them, but paying for a name is nuts. A Savage bolt action in .308Win will cost you less, have extremely good out of the box accuracy with enough cartridge to drop any game in North America. As with any rifle, good ammo is critical. 0 -

I like the way you think, sir.0 -
7mm Wby Mag will outperform a 300 Win Mag with most bullet weights.
I too think some of these new powder burners are overrated.
Don't worry about ammo. Any decent gun shop will have ammo.
But like toilet paper...you're not going to leave the house w/o it.
Since you're question was about Kimber vs Weatherby, especially the SBGM....buy the "B".
Technically a far superior design, has one of the best triggers available, superior stock, and you won't apologize to any one. Ever.
On the bright side...something the general public doesn't know;
Kimber is a good copier, and 'wanna be'.
If only the public knew how Leslie skunked his suppliers when he sold-closed Edeleman's, and his wholesale operation, and would sell stuff as cheap, or cheaper than the dealers who he was selling items too. Took the money, and bought Kimber. Now he competes against the companies tat he used to buy from...and gave him credit.
Neevr bought a Kimber by Leslie Edelman....never will.

Wow, thanks for all the responses.
Seems everyone favors the Weatherby over the Kimber (even if the Weatherby is over priced).
I am looking to buy one hunting rifle to hunt with from Texas to Canada. I know thats almost too much to ask for but.... I thought I had it narrowed down to these two and was leaning to the Kimber cause I like the ballistics on the 300 WSM and I have a Kimber UCP and love it. Seems like the crowd here is not impressed with the Kimber rifles though....
I wish the Weatherby made a 300WSM
would make it easier.
Thanks for the input!0 -
Yo Dashai, Weatherby produces the 300 Winchester Short Magnum only in the Vanguard synthetics! $400 bucks +, not quite the full Weatherby, but still a quality rifle![8D][8D][8D][8D]
