Used firearms ratings.
I often see used firearms stating 90 percent blue or 80 percent finish, etc. Is there a set rule as how to figure these percentages ( a Boon & Crocket of used guns I guess ) or is it just the judgement of the seller ?

No, there is no "set rule" on how to estimate the % of remaining factory finish. It is highly subjective at best, and very very seldom do two different people come up with the same figure/number... especially when the two people involved are the seller & buyer of the firearm in question[:0]. There is a section in the front of the Blue Book of Gun Values that discusses how to grade the condition of firearms, but I have my doubts that many people use it.

Take whatever most sellers say and deduct 15% from the grade...is my rule of thumb.

Welcome to the forum onehalf MOA! Well a number of years ago, the "Blue Book of Gun Values" published a supplement with various, pistols, rifles and shotguns, in various conditions, from 0% to 100%, along with "Reblued" guns. Todays "Blue Book" does have a little of each, about 50 pages dedicated to the grading of Firearms, but nothing close to the original. rldowns3 is very close! Just about everyone can guess a gun is 100%, if it's new in the box. But after that who knows! LOL All I can say, is study the pictures of an auction very close, ask questions, and don't be afraid to ask the seller for more pictures. Learn the fireatm that you are interested in, so you can key in on certain features. Some sellers say a gun "looks" orginal, but it's been reblued. Always ask if the seller has a return policy. Most give 3-5 days to return the gun if it doesn't meet their discription. Hope this helps you. Regards Dave 0 -

if you're bidding on an auction , you should read thru the sellers feedback very carefully , as you can get a sense of how honest they are from what the buyers have to say about them ,,,,, 0
