High Standard 101

A local dealer has a Supermatic 101 on display for $495. It comes with 2 barrels and looks to be in good shape.

I love the way it fits in my hand, but have no idea how well it shoots. I'm looking for accuracy, is this a good model go get?

    Shot competition with one for years and always did pretty well. If well taken care of, a .22 caliber handgun or rifle will last forever.
    The price sounds about average.

    the gun was made from 1954 to 56. its a dovetail pushbutton takedown, not the newer plunger type. sights were biggest complaint on that model. a set screw raised the blade from only one corner making windage adjustments for long shots cause the blade to tilt. and the adjustment is required when you change bbls to the shorter one. grab the gun sideways and try to bend the gun where the bbl meets the frame like as if youre trying to snap a pencil in 2. if the bbl dovetails are worn, youll feel slop in the match up when you wiggle the gun back and forth. otherwise, its great gun. mine would shoot all in the 10x benched @ 25yds. shoot remington standard velocity 22lr for best performance. fyi, no sear or backlash adjustments. the 102 had them. for the money, a nice 102, 103, or 104 tournament would be a better gun. oh...and make sure it has the 2 bbl wts underneath the bbl. youll see the rail they slide on to. if they arent on the gun, then a filler plate should be in the dovetail under both bbls. wts cost 40.00. haggle him if they arent there.

    Thank you for the information. Your depth of knowlege of High Standards is impressive! With the 102-107s available for the same price or less, I guess I'll pass on the 101.

    I have a thousand questions buzzing around in my mind, but I guess I can summarize with one - I have a pretty small hand and what I liked about the 101 is how it fits. If you were me, which model High Standard would you try to find?

    I believe the grip shape and size is essentially the same on all High Standard "Slant Grip" pistols from the Model 101 on. In my opinion, the Models 102 and 103 are the pinacle of High Standards.

    i agree with judgecolt...the 102 and 103 series are the creme-dela-creme. the 101's had a funky little thumb rest. on the 102 and up, they widened it up and made it really nice. but, if you like shooting lefty or both arms, the ambedextrous coke bottle shaped plastic grips are best. rule of thumb...if youre not sure which hi std is best, look for the models with gold eagle logo medallions in the grips. 104 and newer were triggers or a funky bore pattern. not that the quality is any different, but the 'tops' were the 102 and 103's. are you going to shoot match or just looking for a plinker?

    I'm planning on shooting match. I also have a MkII Target I'm about to Volquartsenize and Fungize and a Pardini SP, but want a good High Standard in the arsenal.

    get a citation or trophy grade gun in any series number with 5.5" bull bbl. they will come with sear adjustment, backlash screw, and easy sights to adjust. once you have the hi standard, you can get rid of training wheels with that mk2 and youll never go back. save your money dazzling it up and put it into ammo or extra bbls for you hi std and get good with that hi std. youll get spoiled. trust me. the mk2 will be mushy in comparison.

    its clean, but it doesnt have adjustable sights or any trigger or sear adjustments. remember, any hi std with the word 'king' in it, is a utility grade gun. [:(]

    Found a few Trophys. I'm guessing that the Trophy is a higher-end model than the Citation, so I've been looking at Trophys.

    I found this one interesting, but would appreciate a comment on its worth.

    One thing that surprised me, is that you're recommending a short barrel. In my limited understanding, I thought that longer barrels were supposed to be better. In any case, if the gun I buy has a longer barrel, is there a good source for after-market 5.5" bbls?

    Hello the longer sight radius of a long barrel is to some advanage but most of the time this is negated by the apparent shake that all of us have. On a long barrel it looks worst and the shooter becomes "CHICKEN FINGERED" tries to touch a shot off at just the right time this does not make for good scores.As far as barrels go try BROWNELL"S or www.champchoice.com quote:"PRAISE THE HARDBALL GUN"
