Remington 710

My son will be 14 before deer season and is ready for his first centerfire rifle. He likes the looks and feel of the 710 and I like the price. I'd like some feedback from anyone who owns or has fired one of these rifles a lot. How do YOU like it?

Also, he and I could swear we saw one of these chambered for .308 Winchester last year. From looking around a bit, I see that this rifle is not currently chambered for any short action cartridge. Are we confusing the 710 with another rifle we looked at, or did Remington make this in .308 at some point?

    Anyone have an opinion on it? Seems to be a good deal if it shoots near as good as the 700.

    POS...avoid it....get an ADL if you are looking for an entry level rifle..they don't cost much more than the 710's which are garbage!

    I looked at the 710's back when I was looking at rifle's. The low low price made me curious. I noticed that the stocks were made out of real plastic. Even the trigger gaurd was molded plastic. It came with a pre-sighted bushnell scope and a detatchable mag. That was about the only two items that I liked about it. The bolt was harsh to open and pull it back. The biggest killer of it came from a couple of reviews I read about the bolt breakin in two. I learned that it had plastic inserts in it that tended to break. Unless they updated it since then I also learned that if something happend to the stock then you were just out of luck. Also the barrel is pressed into the plastic stock. I'm pretty sure that you cannot replace the barrel if something were to happen to it. I started refering to it as Remingtons disposable rifle. I ended up with an A-bolt. The Browning A-bolt is a superb rifle which may be more than you are lookin for. So I second Chris's advice. The Model 700 is a legendary rifle you won't be disapointed. You will be disapointed in the model 710. IT IS JUNK!

    I asked the same question a while ago and all the replies I got were that the Rem 710 is junk. Consensus was that I should go with the Savage 111 I was looking at that was lower in price and a MUCH better gun. You might want to check it out too if you're looking in that price range. They offer it in a package deal similar to how the Rem 710 comes.

    i got a savage 111 in 30-06 last year for a back-up, it's a great rifle for the price. the remington 700 adl is a good gun too. i've heard nothing but bad news for the 710.

    Junk with a capital J . For the same price or less you can get a Savage 111 package with the scope and be much happier for reliablity and accuracy. If price matters go SAVAGE.

    Savage is the best deal for the money and more accurate than rifles costing many times more.

    Everybody, thanks for the great advice. I'm not going near the 710. I'll check out the Savage 111 and the ADL. Great forum.

    i too looked at the 710 but denied it. i ended up with a sporterized mauser. the rifle is a piece of work. just make sure you look at all or at least most of your choices before buying

    stay away from the 710 . go for the ADL or the savage , maybe even one of the cheaper winchesters

    I have no experience with the 710, but I can speak about the 700. A 700 ADL was my first high powered rifle, puchased new in 1963. With it I killed my first deer, it's been to Alaska, & from coast to coast. It has fired thousands of rounds, and is one of two high powered rifle that I use for the live fire part of hunter education, which I teach 3 times per year. As noted, I can't give advice on the other rifles mentioned, but I can say that if you choose a 700, it won't let you down.
