Thompson 45acp

I need help choosing a powder for the Thompson SMG (New Karh type). Im going to be shooting a 230 grain jacketed bullet out of a 16 1/2" barrel. I use Bullseye now for my Colt pistol 1911A1 which is a fast burning powder. My guess is my performance will increase using a slower burning pistol powder in the longer barrel. Any sugestions as to a slower burning powder?

    I just purchased a Thompson (Auto Ordiance) in 45acp 16 1/2" barrel. My question is, can any 45acp ammo be used in it? I also handload, and was wondering if the Speer manual 13 info. on the 45acp is acceptable info. for reloading it? Can I used semi-wads or round nose work best? Anyone have a pet round for this gun? I would perfer to stay with lead bullets as very few loads seem to top the 1000ft a sec. Sorry for all the questions.

    I've got a Thompson M1 carbine. FMJ ball is about the only thing it likes. All the hollowpoints I've tried jam like crazy. I thought I'd try different mags & see if they made any difference, but haven't had the time yet.

    Have a friend that has the Thompson auto Ordance 45 like yours. He only uses FMJ round nose bullets. Has had no problems with jams. He use to shoot it all the time. I owned the Thompson Auto Ordance 45 ACP handgun. It shot like a dream, never a minuets problem. One of my relatives talked me out of it. My former TOA made the trip to Desert Storm and took care of busness over there.

    The current Auto Ordnance "Carbine" is a semi-auto (only) version of the WWII Thompson M1A1 Submachine Gun. It was designed to feed and shoot G.I. Ball .45ACP ammunition.....full metal jacket round nose.

    Without modification, I doubt if it would feed semi-wadcutter rounds, and since many SWC cartridges are lighter target loads, even if it would feed them, I doubt if the action would fully cycle.

    If you're going to use Round Nose Lead, stay away from "hot loads" (above 1000 fps) as leading of the barrel could be a problem.

    Best stick to the diet was designed for.....FMJRN.

    Thanks everyone for the help! Looks like a steady diet of FMJ's will be the key. I might try a few RNL's just to see how they feed, will let you all know the results.

    You might try a box of the Winchester BEB Brass enclosed Base WC452
    The Local sheriff turned my attention to these. They look like a semi wadcutter, except they are full enlosed except for the tip which is lead. These feed well in all my 45. Thompson 1911, colt 1911,
    Mac10 and even my Encop MP45. I couldnt honestly tell you how they would work in your gun. But they work fine in mine..
