Stevens reference books/web sites ?
For some time now I have been accumulating (collecting makes it sound like I know what I'm doing) Stevens single shots..Mostly .22 boys' rifles. With so many variations in features and barrel stampings, I really need some reference material. Anyone know of any good books or web sites?

Dang thats a hard one, i'm a old Stevens fan myself, i'm sure you've already tryed a web search for stevens firearms, might try a search on the auction for vintage Stevens & contact anyone who has maybe more than one listed, try the ebay thing & search for gun books/manuals, kinda like lookin for a `14 yr old virgin in Arkanevermind, luck to ya[:D]

If you are really serious, you will need all 5 of Jim Grant's books (not just Boy's Single Shot Rifles). On the other hand, you can easily find Jay Kimmel's Savage & Stevens Arms Collector's History, which is an inexpensive paperback. It does a decent job covering Stevens boy's rifles including the Sure Shot model which is the Holy Grail. 0 -
Found the Kimmel book on Amazon...also "Savage and Stevens Arms and History,1849 to Date" by Bill West......Hope it's a good one, as I gave $75 for it! Jim Grant's books have so far eluded me. Thanks, guys.....Any more ideas, pass them along...

Enter "j grant" as Author, and "rifle" as keyword in the search boxes. They can supply three of his books at present.0 -

I am sorry to hear that you wasted your hard earned $$ on one of Bill West's terrible books... unfortunately you paid good money for something that is not worth wiping your arse with[xx(][V]
For what it is worth, Bill West wrote some of the absolute WORST firearms literaure that exists... I unfortunately learned that lesson the hard way many years ago after buying four of the five books (bought them all at once) that he so poorly wrote (for a lack of a better way to describe his complete lack of authoring skills) about Winchester firearms.
p.s. forgot to add... Stevens opened it doors for business in 1864, and Savage in 1895. I Wonder how old Bill West came up with any history for Stevens from 1849 to 1864[?]

Don't forget aboput the Stevens/Savage historian. I don't have his name handy (John Calahan?) but if you call Savage they will give you his name,number and address.

I agree Bert. I bought West's books many years ago when they were relatively inexpensive and haven't looked at any of them after my first look. Kimmel's inexpensive book contains articles from the American Rifleman and other sources in addition to some Stevens catalogs that have enough info to satisfy all but the most serious collector.
