t/c 45/70
would like to hunt 50 yard w'tails w/ this in the eastren woods. not looking for the mother of all loads as even w/ the muzzletamer on it, recoil seems like it may be a factor. is that putting it mildly?anyone have any experience w/ the 300 gr hornady in the t/c at the start loads listed in the manuals in terms of expansion and effect on game at those velocities, 50 yds? i have used this bullet in the rifles but at about 1600/1700 fps. i am thinking probably more like 1100/1200 fps in the tc.any thoughts on this would be appreciated and thanks to all.

You didn't state barrel length, but T/C's std. length for this caliber is 16 1/2 so we'll go with that.
Minimum load w/ H110, H4227 or 1680 will produce approx. 1500 fps of velocity and almost 1500 ft. lbs. of energy. If your using minimum loads for 680, IMR-4198 or RE-7 your going to be seeing velocities between 1600 and 1700 fps with energy running 1700 to 1900+.
Bullet performance will not be an issue, and brake or not recoil is significant. Practice with this round can only be done in small doses, but I do recommend that you get in a few sessions.
Lastly, if you have any sensitivity to recoil, reconsider your choice of caliber.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
I think that the .44mag is unpleasant to shoot in the older Contenders. After about 5-10 shots, the webbing between my thumb and forefinger gets pretty tender. I also believe, from experience, that the .44mag is overkill and destroys too much meat on most white-tails. I found that the .45LC was an acceptable compromise.
A 45-70 at 50 yards is more than overkill, and you would have to pay me about $50 to shoot it.

I have a 12" Hunter barrel (no sights )with the muzzle tamer.I wear a pair of unlined leather gloves when I shoot,it makes a big difference.

The 45-70 is fine up to about a hundred or so yards with that short of a barrel. Recoil isn't too bad, even with 405 grain bullets. If you like recoil try the 35 Remington. 0 -
The muzzle tamer works. Loads that hurt in my Ruger #3 were no problem in the TC with a 16 1/2" barrel & shoulder stock. 0 -

thank all of you that replied. touching this sucker off is going to require some forethought, and ben, i wish someone would pay me to do it. but judging from the responses and good suggestions[gloves, a good idea], it may prove interesting. as far as meat damage goes[ deer, not mine]deer i have taken w/ the 45/70 rifle have always had less bloodshot meat than say,a 30/06 but went down quick. a .44 though a shoulder,w/ a relatively lightly constucted bullet would likely be not a good thing. have shot .44s, .375h&h regularly,and am not hungry for recoil but the accuracy and usefullness of those cartridges make them worthwhile in and of themselves. if i don't wind up w/ a crease on my forehead after the 1st shot, i might learn to like it. 0
