7/8" scope

Can anyone recommend a good 7/8" scope for under $100? I have a 61 Winchester that has been drilled and tapped for the OLD Weaver side mount T series. The gun was made in the 40's....what do you think?

    I don't know if you can get one for under $100, but the best scope I know of that's 7/8" is the Leupold Alaskan. They were made in 2 1/2, 4, & 6x. They are made of steel tubing, and their weight is about the same as a larger alloy scope. I have 4 and couldn't be happier with them.

    I think I have a 7/8" Texan scope around here that I could sell at a reasonable price, but it and the Lyman Alaskan both relied on adjustable bases like the Redfield, because their internal windage and elevation ajustments move the reticule. Its really disconcerting to have your cross hairs off in a corner. If I were you, I'd buy a Leopold Alaskan as Ray suggested for that fine old gun. If not, get a 3/4" T mount and use a modern 22 scope in it.

    I don't think the Leupold outfit would help him. As I read his question, the 61 is alread drilled for a Weaver stamped side mount. I believe he is trying to find a scope to work with that mount, rather than further deface the rifle with more screw holes.

    There are plenty of older (US made) Weavers around. If you can't find one on this site, try FleaBay.

    Finding one of the fine Leupold Alaskans for less than $100 would be quite a chore. I would suggest using the Texan scope mentioned by Joel and tolerating the off center crosshairs. The shooters of the 1950's tolerated such systems.

    It wasn't so bad because so many of the mounts back then had windage ajustments so that the cross hairs stayed in the middle of the field horizontally, but were a little high or low. I really question if his T style side mount is for a 7/8" scope. Weaver did make some, but they are relatively rare compared to the 3/4" mounts.
