"Noisy" rod spring

I just bought a new op rod for my M1 and I put the old spring back in it. I cleaned out the inside of the rod very well but the spring still makes more noise than it did when I had the old rod in the gun. It sounds like there is too much bind on the spring when I pull the slide back...I don't know. Any suggestions?

  get a new spring and see if that cures it
  the old spring may be out of spec.
