savage 99

Can you tell me what year Savage starting putting a serial number on the 99 lever gun? I have one that does not have a serial and do not know what model of the 99 it is. I can give some details. Chamber 300 Savage, 24" barrel, mag indicator, and an indicator when gun is cocked and chambered. Aside from that, I don't know what other info to include. Thanks.

I appreciate all the info. I have looked all over the receiver and everywhere else I could not find a serial...still have not found one. The sights have been removed and a scope mounted on it. I did take the scope and mount off to see if serial would be there...but the only thing stamped on top was SAVAGE 99...nothing else. It does have the lever lock for safety. Forearm is checkered with an upside down triangle...and the grip has checkering as well. I guess the Mag indicator is a counter for number of rounds in the magazine... I really don't know where else to look for a serial. Thanks again to all.

Okay, I just got an email back from Small Arms Shop and told them the same thing I have posted here...they told me that in 1947 some guns did leave without serial numbers because the machine that stamped the numbers were broke at that time and they were shipped out without serial on them. Can anyone confirm this? Thanks again.

    I have an old savage 99 that the barrel is shot out it's in 300 savage now needs new barrel thinking about getting barrel 22-250 is this a doable project

    Depends upon which model 99 it is. Some are rather rare and some pretty common. Take a look at http://www.savage99.com/ for some quick and easy back ground on what I mean by which model. That said there is some variation depending upon the part of the country you are in, but I would say that is pretty much top dollar for a well used 99 in maybe 70% condition. It would also not be my first choice of caliber. I think if you really want a nice 99, keep looking.

    Sorry! I missed the h on first reading. The h was built between 1923 and 1940 (so it is not pre-WWI) and a little under 200,000 were made. Less common and older than a lot of them out there. Your call, my choice would still be another caliber. I still think that is top dollar.

    By Blue Book and what you say, it's probably in the realm of reality, if the wood is still pretty good and the bore is good. If you are planning on using it for hunting, I think He Dog is right to say look around for a more modern or easier caliber to find. I don't remember, but I think the .303 is like a hot 30-30 ballistically, but the ammo is going to be somewhat harder to find and probably won't be a Wally World special. They were made in excellent calibers like .308, .243, .284win, .250 savage,30-30, .358 win,.300savage, tho the .284,.358 bring premium prices and are rare and the .300 and .250 savage ammo can be a little tougher to find. Main thing too is that the lever/bolt locks up snug. If for a collection, your call.

    Ballistically the british .303 is right up there on a par with the venerable 30:06....last time i checked walmart did stock hunting rounds for this caliber. The accuracy of the british lee-enfield .303 is legendary. have seen 1/2" shot groups at extreme long range.If i were to consider paying that much for that particular rifle i would certainly want a real good look at the rifling and the bore. if surplus ammo was fed into it without proper cleaning of corrosive primers it could have a detrimental effect on accuracy.above all:----does it have the 'feel' you like?
    this forum has many many fine experts out here who have really good advice
    i never tire of reading their posts. I'm sure there will be many more knowledgable than i who can give you better advice

    .303 savage and .303british are two different worlds apart. mod. 99's were not produced in .303 british.[:)]

    This is NOT a .303 British and do not even attempt to put the british round in this gun. I have two of the .303 Savage 99's both made in the early 1900's. The ammo is very tough to find and at last I knew came in around $30-$40 a box . Nice little deer round but the experts are correct, look for one in a better caliber with some easy to find ammo.

    .303 Savage is not the Brit version as stated above. The h model was made in .303 Savage and .30-30, and the .300 came along in the last couple of years of that model if memory serves. It will be a little difficult and pricey to feed. I have one in .300 Savage, which is like a .30-30 with muscles. I would like one in .250-3000.

    I am very partial to the 99's. From what you describe I believe that price is in the ballpark but part of the gun culture is trying to get a better deal. I have a 99F in .300 Sav and a 99E in .250/3000. Love them both and they shoot fine.

    Bought my last 99 in 303 for $75 CDN....not pretty, but a good shooter.
